Medermit trained by Alan King and the Phillip Hobbs trained Captain Chris, go head to head today in what looks to be a cracking Totesport Challengers Novices Chase also known as the Scilly Isles Novices Chase at Sandown Park. Bookmakers generally make Medermit the slight favourite to win with odds of around 7/2 offered by Paddy Power being amongst the better prices offered. They have Captain Chris at 4/1.
The race which is a leading trial for the Arkle Challenger Trophy coming up at the Cheltenham Festival next month will be run over 2 miles and 4 furlongs which will undoubtedly test the stamina of the two leading lights who both come into the race in fine form and well supported by connections. Medermit was last seen last month when an unlucky second to Hell’s Bay in the Grade 2 Tight Travel Dipper Novice Chase at Cheltenham. A jumping error cost him that race but trainer King was well pleased with the performance, particularly as the first two were over 20 lengths clear of the third horse home, Reve De Sivola, who opposes again in this.
Captain Chris who was tipped by Pricewise to win this in the Racing Post the other day, has been second in his last three starts, but has never finished outside the first two in any of his six jump races and showed great courage when beaten last time by the Paul Nicholls trained Ghizao in the Andover Novices Chase at Newbury at the end of 2010. The Hobbs stable are particularly bullish about his chance to get back into the winners enclosure in this, which should convince many to take the 4/1 currently on offer.
The in form yard of Nicky Henderson will be represented by Nadiya De La Vega, a two from two Novice Chase winner this season already, who looked very impressive when winning the William Hill Novice Chase at Kempton Park last month, where he still won despite a bad blunder two fences from home and where his jockey lost an iron. The Seven Barrows stable will also have Mr Gardner in the race, who won his comeback race at Huntingdon last month after 22 months absence with injury. A race of this quality may have come a bit too soon for the latter but at 5/1 with paddypower the former, Nadiya De La Vega looks excellent value. Rock Noir is also worthy of a mention, trained by Jonjo O’Neill and who will be ridden by Tony McCoy was a seven length winner of the Jade and Adam Tyler Novice Chase at Warwick on New Year’s Eve, the five year old should improve on that performance and could possibly be the surprise horse of this race!
7/2 Medermit
4/1 Captain Chris
11/2 Nadiya De La Viga
6/1 Rock Noir
8/1 Rebel Du Maquis
9/1 Mr Gardner
10/1 Hidden Keel
10/1 Reve De Sivola
33/1 Bar
Odds supplied by Paddypower who will be operating an in-running market for this race.
