Although it looks like only six will go to post for the Group One Matron Stakes at Leopardstown this afternoon, the race is still full of quality and should provide an excellent spectacle for racegoers and punters alike. Favourite with odds of 2/1 for the one mile race is the Mick Channon trained, Music Show, winner of the Group One, Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket in July, where she had Spacious two lengths behind, who opposes again here. The win was excellent compensation for Music Show, who had ran with no luck finishing 6th in the 1000 Guineas, behind Special Duty and then 3rd in the Irish 1000 Guineas behind Bethrah, who also opposes here. Aidan O’Brien who has yet to train the winner of the race tries his hand with Lillie Langtry, who has been inconsistent in Group One company so far this season. She began with a creditable fifth in the Irish1000 Guineas and followed that up with a fantastic win in the Group One, Coronations Stakes at Royal Ascot, where she had Music Show well beaten back in fourth. Her last run came in the Falmouth Stakes where the tables were turned with Music Show, who won the race in great style. If Lillie Langtry can reproduce the form of the Coronations Stakes then she will be the one to beat, She is currently second favourite at 11/4 with Bet365.com.
The Dermot Weld trained, Bethrah is the filly with the highest credentials having won the Irish 1000 Guineas back in May, but she has not been seen on a race track since which has raised doubts about her well-being. She had both Music Show and Lillie Langtry beaten in that race and on that form she should not be ignored with odds of 7/2.
Representing the older generation is the James Fanshawe trained, five year old, Spacious, who finished 2 lengths second behind Music Show in the Falmouth Stakes and also finished in the frame on her only other two starts this season. Spacious who was second in the Newmarket 1000 Guineas back in 2008, has never won a Group One race and we think with odds of 9/2 she will struggle to do so again here.
