Irish Hennessey Gold Cup Odds: Joncol in Great Form to Win Again

Paul Nicholls who sent over Neptune Collonges to win this Grade 1 Irish Hennessey Gold Cup a couple of years ago and was looking to repea the feat last weekend at Leopardstown with his highly regarded Pride Of Dulcote, winner at the end of December of the Mandarin Chase at Newbury. However, since last weekend's meeting was abandoned due to waterlogging, the Nicholls team have decided against sending their Gold Cup hope over to Ireland for the reschuled meeting on Saturday and Prdie Of Dulcote doesn't run. This menas that last year's winner Joncol now heads the betting for Saturday's contest, with bookmaker Bet365 going odds of 11/8.

Joncol is said to be in great shape by his trainer, Paul Nolan. The horse was last seen finishing third behind Pandorama in the Grade 1 Lexus Chase over this course and distance at the end of December, where he put up a solid performance without ever seriously threatening the winner. Nolan has said that he came out of the race in great form and everything has gone well since at home, he confirmed that he expected a big race from the 8 year old.

Willie Mullins whose stable are in great form currently had two in the race but like Pride Of Dulcote, Cooldine will not be running in Saturday's race. The other Mullins horse is Kempes winner of the Grade 1 Punchestown Champion Chase at the Punchestown Festival last April. With all of the withdrawls, Kempes is now the best priced 6/1 third favourite for the race on Saturday.

Money Trix, trained by Nicky Richards was second in the Lexus and a repeat of that form might just be good enough to win this, particularly as he had Joncol held in that race. However he does not always run to the form book and at 11 years old he may be just past his best. Nonetheless he should not be ruled with odds of 7/2 from bet365.

China Rock is another who would be in with a big chance, he was third, just over 4 lengths behind Kauto Star in the JNWine Champion Chase at Down Royal last November but before that he beat Sizing Europe in a good quality Grade 3 at Punchestown in October. The same chance would have to be afforded to The Listener too, who is almost certain to take on the front running role and set a brisk gallop. He faded on his comeback race in the Lexus after running well for a long time, but he will come on for that run and should he find the form that won him the 2009 JNWine Champion Chase and this race in 2008, then the 7/1 against him winning this might be worth snapping up.
