Dr PJ Moriarty Novice Chase Betting: Mikael D Haguenet odds on to register first win over big fences

Only six runners go to post in this year's running of the Dr PJ Morarty Novice Chase at Leopardstown on Saturday, as organisers re-scheduled Sunday's meeting due to the abandonement forced by waterlogging at the track. The Willie Mullins trained Mikael D'Haguenet is likely to go off the odds on favourite. Irish bookmaker Boylesports make the former Cheltenham winner their 4/5 odds on favourite to score for the first time as a chaser.

You'd be a brave punter to back Mikael D'Haguenet at odds on this weekend, with the seven year old yet to win over jumps in his two attempts so far this season. After a fine hurdling career, winning six out of nine including five Grade 1's, the seven year old spent a year on the sidelines before his reappearance over the bigger obstacles last December. Sent off the 6/4 favourite in the Drinmore Novice Chase, he cruised up alongside the leaders before falling at the last. He could have been excused that novicey mistake but his subsequent ten and a half length defeat at Leopardstown last time out was less impressive. Sent off at odds of 4/7 he never looked like winning over the shorter trip and that defeat pretty much made up the trainer's mind that the longer RSA Chase route would be the preferred destination.

Only Cooldine has gone on to win the RSA Chase following victory in this race, two years ago. Mikael D'Haguenet is currently the third favourite for Cheltenham at odds of 10/1, behind the horse who beat him earlier in the season Jessies Dream and the favourite Time For Rupert.

Of the five contenders up against the favourite on Saturday, Quel Esprit, Magnanimity and Bostons Angel look to have the best claims. Boyle Sports make stablemate Quel Esprit second favourite at odds of 7/2 whilst Magnanimity is 6/1 and Bostons Angel 7/1 respectively. Willie Mullins also trains Quel Esprit, who wasn't originally going to run in this race when it was due to go ahead last Sunday. A winner last time out on his chasing debut at Limerick on his only start this season in November, the seven year old was a well fancied hurdler at last year's Cheltenham Festival, where he fell in the Neptune only to reappear two days later finishing fifth in the Albert Bartlett.

Dessie Hughes trains seven year old Magnaminity who travels to Leopardstown on Saturday off the back of two wins in his last two outings. A course and distance winner last time out beating Jessies Dream, the horse that beat Mikael D'Haguenet in the Drinmore Chase. This is a step up in class but you feel that he'll be there or thereabouts should the favourite slip up. Bostons Angel also hads a win on the course , winning the Fort Leney Novice Chase, a Grade 1 contest back at the Christmas meeting. His odds of 33/1 for the RSA Chase could be clipped in considerably if he were to get the better of Mikael D'Haguenet.

A quick word for the remaining two runners, as the betting suggests they are no rags and it wouldn't be a huge upset were they to make either of the places. 20/1 chance Western Charmer trained by Dessie Hughes has a win over the big fences to his name, three outings ago in a Beginners Chase at Thurles. He has since gone on to finish third behind Bostons Angel at Christmas and finish runner up behind Quito De La Roque last time out in a Grade 2 at Naas. Sam Adams is the outsider of the field but at 20/1 still has claims. The eight year old trained by Paul Nolan was a winner last time out at Fairyhouse and is a 50/1 outsider for the RSA Chase at Cheltenham.
