Tony McCoy will be looking to complete a full set of 'National' wins at the rearranged Coral Welsh National at Chepstow on Saturday. McCoy chances of completing that elusive set looks good as he is set to ride ante-post favourite Synchronised who is 5/1 odds on favourite with William Hill bookmakers to win the £100,000 race. But he will be carrying a heavy weight and should face a real challenge from the likes of Maktu and Dance Island.
McCoy has won the other three 'Nationals' after he finally won the Aintree Grand National showpiece at the fifteenth attempt in April with Don't Push It. However he has never won the Welsh National in eight attempts, failing to finish in four, and will be hoping that Synchronised can help him end his barren run. The 8-year-old is trained by Jonjo O'Neill, as is Don't Push It, and was impressive in winning the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter in March. But he has been less impressive in finishing fifth and sixth in his appearances so far this season, and with a burden of 11st 6lb it may be worth a look elsewhere.
Maktu is next in the betting and is offered at industry best priced odds of 8/1 by Hills bookmakers and the Pat Murphy trained horse could be a decent punt. He is carrying a good racing weight of 10st 6lb and was hugely impressive in defeat by a head to King Fontaine in his seasonal reappearance at Haydock in November. The 9-year-old recorded a win at Haydock in April by 20 lengths from Vodka Brook and is regarded as a horse that is more than capable of lasting the distance which bodes well for the 3 miles and 5 furlongs at Chepstow, and he could be the one to beat on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Dance Island has shortened to odds of 10/1 with williamhill.com as trainer Ben Case looks for his first high profile win. The 8-year-old will carry 10st 7lb and has a good record over fences, winning three of four starts. He caught the eye in losing by only three lengths to eventual Hennessy Gold Cup runner up Burton Port at Aintree in April and should be challenging the top two. An interesting entry is that of Paul Nicholls' Watamu Bay who is offered at shortened odds of 11/1 by Hills, and it will be interesting to see how the 8-year-old fairs as he has never raced outside of novices over fences before and is high up in the weights.
Meanwhile, last year's runner up Silver By Nature is industry best priced odds of 14/1 with William Hill and the 9-year-old should be all the more competitive for last year's experience. Lucinda Russell's horse won the Blue Square Gold Cup by 15 lengths last February but will be carrying top weight of 11st 12lb this time around. While last year's winner Dream Alliance is also an industry best priced 14/1 but has pulled up in all of his three previous starts and is best left alone.
In terms of other entries, Bluesea Cracker had been third favourite for Saturday but has had to be withdrawn unfortunately after the Irish Grand National winner picked up an injury.
