There is a small but select field for Sunday's Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse, with Willie Mullins' Mourad the 13/8 favourite after Thousand Stars was withdrawn. Five have been declared for the two and a half mile contest and we fancy Voler La Vedette could prove to be the pick of the field at tempting odds of 9/4 with Paddy Power.
Willie Mullins, who won this race when Hurricane Fly beat Solwhit last year, boasts three entries for the final Grade One of Sunday's racecard. Mourad is undoubtedly his leading hope after Thousand Stars was withdrawn, despite being the evens favourite, and the Morgiana Hurdle winner will now wait until Christmas for his next outing.
The Fairyhouse ground is soft to heavy at the moment and Mourad has already proven his credentials when a course and distance winner on the soft in 2010. The 6-year-old is making his seasonal reappearance and he desperately needs to start turning 'nearly performances' into wins as he was fourth in this race last year and third in the World Hurdle in March.
Voler La Vedette could well deny Mourad again though and Colm Murphy's mare is in receipt of 7lbs from the rest of the field this weekend. The daughter of King's Theatre got within two and a half lengths of Solwhit at Punchestown last year and was only three lengths behind Hurricane Fly when third in this race last season.
The 7-year-old arrives in good form after winning with her tongue tied for the first time in a Grade Two hurdle at Navan last month. She is a course and distance winner after nailing the Irish Strawberry Hurdle in April and she could well be on the verge of the first Grade One win of her career, with Paddy Power pricing her 12/1 for the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival.
Elsewhere, Edward O'Grady's The Real Article is available at odds of 3/1 this weekend as the progressive gelding looks to build on his two Grade Two successes so far. The 6-year-old has yet to finish outside of the first four during his national hunt career and he is available at industry best priced odds of 25/1 for the Champion Hurdle in March.
Meanwhile, Willie Mullins could supplement Mourad with Mikael D'Haguenet, although the 7-year-old is likely to run on Saturday instead. He was a beaten 7/4 favourite by Volder La Vedette at Navan last month as his winless streak extended to seven races and he is still finding his feet after missing much of the 2009/10 season with injury.
Mullins' County Hurdle hero Final Approach completes the field at 16/1 with PaddyPower.com. The son of Pivotal was last seen finishing fifth to Thousand Stars in the French Champion Hurdle and he looks up against it on the basis of his form at the back end of last season.
13/8 Mourad
9/4 Voler La Vedette

7/1 Mikael D'Haguenet
