The 2010 Breeders Cup gets underway this Friday at Churchill Downs with six races on the first day, which includes four at Grade One level , one at Grade Two and one at Grade Three. We look at the races which we think offer the best chances for the European contingent with tips where appropriate offered below. The six race card is as follows:
Breeders Cup Race Card and Betting - Friday 5th November 2010
| Time | Race | Grade | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20:10 | Breeders Cup Marathon | 3 | 1m6f |
| 20:50 | Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf | 2 | 1m |
| 21:30 | Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint | 1 | 7f |
| 22:10 | Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies | 1 | 1m |
| 22:50 | Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf | 1 | 1m 3f |
| 23:30 | Breeders Cup Ladies Classic | 1 | 1m 1f |
Breeders Cup Marathon
The first race up is the Grade Three, Breeders Cup Marathon over 1 mile and 6 furlong, which is in its third year. Unsurprisingly it is a race that suits the European horses far more than those in the States as it is not a distance usually associated with US Flat racing. Indeed the first two winners of the race have both been European, however this year the Americans have put together a much sterner challenge and the betting for the race is headed by the Chris Block trained, Giant Oak, who has odds of around the 9/2 mark.
The European challenge is led by the Aidan O’Brien trained, Bright Horizon, with Precision Break being a second challenger from the Paul Cole yard. O’Brien trained Man Of Iron to win this race last year and Bright Horizon comes into the race on the back of an excellent victory in the Irish Cesarewitch over two miles at the Curragh at the end September. He looks terrific value at 6/1 with most Bookmakers.
Precision Break, despite being well drawn finished well down the field in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket, last month, but before that showed some very useful form over 1 mile 6½ furlongs when winning the Mallard Stakes at Doncaster in September. It is generally thought that the five year old will be taking on too much in this higher grade race, but at around 14/1 generally he should interest each way punters.
Selection: Bright Horizon @ 6/1 with Paddy Power
Juvenile Fillies Turf
There is plenty of European interest in the Grade Two, Juvenile Fillies Turf over 1 mile, with yet another O’Brien horse in with a good chance. Together who ran the brilliant, White Moonstone to within half a length in the Group One, Meon Valley Stud Fillies Mile at Ascot in September looks to have an outstanding chance to underline her credentials in this race. But to win however, she must get the better of the highly rated and unbeaten favourite, Winter Memories who looked very impressive when winning in Grade three company last time out. John Gosden looks to have a chance with his filly, Flood Plain as does Richard Hannon with his improving Tale Untold, but for us we think Aidan O’Brien can strike at Churchill Downs with an early double
Selection: Together @ 5/1 with Paddy Power Bookmakers
Fillies & Mare Turf
For many this is the big race of the evening, with the Henry Cecil trained, Midday taking centre stage. The brilliant filly, who has won her last three races all at Group One level, including last time out in the Prix Vermeille at Longchamp, is a hot favourite to win her fourth and bag a big money prize for her connections. On paper there is little in this field that should trouble her and although her odds are short at around the 11/10 mark, she is our banker of the day.
Selection: Midday @ 11/10 with Paddy power
