Starspangledbanner would appear to have several advantages over his rivals as he tries to land his third Group One Sprint this season in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock Park this Saturday. The main advantage being that he is returning to six furlongs the distance on which he won the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and the July Sprint Cup at Newmarket. One advantage that he will not have, ironically will be the fact that he is favourite for the race which has not been kind to jollies down the years, with only three winning in the last fifteen years. Nonetheless Bookmakers are reporting widespread support for him and he has been backed into 6/4 with most although 7/4 is still available via VC Bet.
A further advantage he might benefit from is that Regal Parade, currently second favourite, at around 4/1 will not have the ground in his favour as he attempts to win the race for a second successive year for trainer, Dandy Nicholls.

Given therefore that Starspangledbanner is the one to beat in the race, it would be prudent to perhaps look elsewhere for better value and one horse who punters should never rule out of Group One sprints is the Robin Bastiman trained Borderlescott. Although he did not run up to par last time in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, he was found to be lame, meaning that his sixth place in that race was actually an outstanding effort. Admittedly this race is over 6 furlongs which most say is one furlong too long for him, however his jockey, Neil Callan, certainly does not agree and was very bullish about his chances and has confirmed that 8 year old is in top form at home. The ground has seemingly come good for him too, making the 10/1 about him from Victor Chandler look very attractive, certainly for each way punters.
After winning the Group Two Temple Stakes at the beginning of the season, Kingsgate Native seems to have lost his appetite for racing, disappointments have followed disappointments since then and his 9th place in the Nunthorpe at York last month sums his season up. Nonetheless his trainer, Sir Michael Stoute remains a believer in him and would not have entered him in this race if he did not think he was up to winning it. We cannot see it ourselves at Betting Directory, but the Stoute yard often comes up with surprise winners and with odds of 10/1 he should not be ruled out.

One other we like the look of is the Barry Hills trained, Prime Defender, winner of the Group Two Duke of York Stakes back in May, where he had Starspangledbanner well behind. That said he has finished behind the Ballydoyle sprint star three times since, which of course makes it hard to reason why he could beat him in this. However, last time out in the Nunthorpe over five furlongs, he was finishing particularly well and may have won had it been over six. He gets that in this race and he will also be running on a flat course, something that he is known to prefer. In addition, his trainer has preferred him for this race to stable sprint star, Equiano who has been withdrawn. Primed Defender can be backed at a very tempting 20/1, also with Victor Chandler Bookmakers.
