US Army Ranger tipped to land Investec Derby glory at Epsom Downs
Saturday 4th June, 2016 - 4:30pm Epsom Downs - Investec Derby
One of horse racing's finest spectacles takes place on Saturday afternoon, but punters and form judges alike are none the wiser which Classic colt will reign supreme in the Investec Derby, which takes centre stage at 4:30pm, as an ultra-competitive field will assemble at the 1m 4f 10y start for what may not be a vintage renewal of the Epsom Downs showpiece, but is certainly a cracking betting heat to get stuck into.
- Aidan O'Brien has trained the winner three of the last four years (saddles five runners)
- John Gosden trained Golden Horn to glory last year (Wings Of Desire)
- The last 17 winners have been priced 7/1 or lower

Ballydoyle Quintet Will Have Huge Say In Classic
Aidan O'Brien will unleash a five-pronged attack at this year's Derby and the five-times winner of the race will be aiming to recapture a crown he has won in three of the last four seasons, but he certainly lacks that superstar from a form perspective for this year's race, however, some of his quintet are sure to relish the test of Epsom Downs.
US Army Ranger appears to be his primary shot at the Group 1 race, with stable jockey Ryan Moore electing to partner this son of Galileo, and he battled to victory in the Chester Vase last month, and with only two career runs under his belt is sure to improve, so he could well look the most attractive betting proposition at 5/1 with Ladbrokes.
He may have struggled to down stablemate Port Douglas (16/1) on the Roodee, but he showed signs of immaturity that day and is sure to improve for that run, so is open to improvement, whilst Deauville, who is 10/1 with Betfred, adds more strength to O'Brien's team, but he failed to down Wings Of Desire in the Dante Stakes.
Gosden's Aims To Retain Derby Crown With Desire
John Gosden saddled the imperious Golden Horn to Derby glory last term and in Wings Of Desire he will have the Derby favourite, and the 9/2 shot with BetVictor impressed when staying on in taking fashion in the aforementioned Dante Stakes, and he is another who appears on the upgrade and has to be respected.
However, he took a fair time to warm up that day on the Knavesmire and may just be tapped for a little toe at this higher level, so he is certainly worth taking on in a field that is devoid of a class act on paper, but is certainly not lacking in intrigue as 16 runners will do battle for the coveted prize.
Andre Fabre knows what it takes to win the Derby having saddled Pour Moi to victory in 2011 and he will send over the eye-catching Cloth Of Stars, who was a winner in Group 2 company last time out, however, will need a lot more to win here, so is easily avoidable at 7/1 with bet365 bookmakers.
Harzand and Moonlight Magic Best Of The Rest
Dermot Weld's Harzand bagged victory in the Ballysax Stakes last time out and is entitled to improve on that success, and is possibly the attractive each-way play at 12/1 with Betfred, whilst Moonlight Magic impressed in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial and is another 12/1 shot that can't be completely ignored.
Of the others, Sir Michael Stoute's Ulysses is far too short at 7/1, so can be swiftly moved into the dismiss column, and it maybe wise to take a chance with US Army Ranger, who has long be touted for Derby glory, and he's expected to build on his two career wins and finally fulfil his promise and storm to victory in a wide open renewal.
