Kauto Star’s mesmerising performance in the Cheltenham Gold Cup showed the old boy still has the burning ambition for the game, as he just came up short against the youthful Long Run. Now he heads to the Emerald Isle to try and bag another Grade One prize in the Guinness Gold Cup. The Paul Nicholls-trained eleven-year-old strode to the front with a circuit to go at Cheltenham, but struggled to live with Long Run from two out and had to settle for third behind Nicky Henderson’s charge and stablemate Denman.
However, it won’t be a stroll in the park for Kauto Star and could Paddy Power’s Evens be a bit short with seven other runners all feasibly in with a squeak.
Nacarat is bound to be at the forefront of punter’s minds when thinking of a major contender and Tom George’s front-running grey is 4/1 with Paddy Power. A model of consistency for connections, Nacarat has notched up some gutsy performances, none more so when beating Carole’s Legacy in the Totesport Bowl at Aintree. Earlier in the season, the ten-year-old had finished behind Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase after leading the field a merry dance for the majority of the Kempton contest. Nevertheless, like Kauto Star Nacarat is in the veteran stage now and after a tough race in Liverpool could well be worth taking on at 4/1.
Kempes burst on to the Grade One scene when breezing to glory in the Irish Hennessy but never travelled in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and is a lot better than that. He does have a decent record at Punchestown as he showed when winning the Champion novice Chase last year and at 4/1 could well be the value in the race.
Tranquil Sea looked back to his best when he won the John Durkan Chase at Fairyhouse but having bypassed Cheltenham he bombed in the Melling Chase and he will have to recapture some early season form if he is to get close in this intriguing race. At 12/1 with PaddyPower he looks fairly priced if he was to return to form but he finished sixth last year in this race and has yet to show that this trip will be suffice.
Roberto Goldback (16/1) finished third in the John Durkan behind Tranquil Sea and even though won easily in a Listed contest last time out must improve to have any chance of venturing into a place.
Follow The Plan ran creditably behind Nacarat in the Totesport Bowl at a huge price, but he has yet to show his worth on this surface and at 20/1 looks to be another with an uphill battle.
The Dessie Hughes’ duo of Rare Bob (25/1) and Vic Venturi (40/1) both have jumping issues but the former could be the best of the pair but still lack the pizzazz of some of today’s rivals.
For most of these question marks hang over their head but with Kauto Star being far too short then the speculative selection is to be with Kempes.
Evs Kauto Star
4/1 Nacarat
4/1 Kempes
12/1 Tranquil Sea
16/1 Roberto Goldback
20/1 Follow The Plan
25/1 Rare Bob
40/1 Vic Venturi
