2011 Chester Cup Odds: Overturn heads betting for Donald McCain

Supporters of Overturn would have been ecstatic when the Donald McCain-trained runner was handed stall one for this year's Chester Cup. A quality performer over obstacles this year for the Grand National winning trainer returns to the flat and is 5/1 favourite with Victor Chandler.

He has not been seen in this sphere since finishing last of 20 in the Ebor, but the seven-year-old was reinvigorated with a return to hurdling and has finished second to the classy Binocular and was also third in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. However, it has not been striking form and even though he will carry an attractive weight of 8st 13lbs could be worth taking on in this ultra-open contest.

Red Cadeaux is next in the betting at 13/2 with Victor Chandler but will have to defy a career high mark of 103 to prevail here. A gallant second in the Rosebery Handicap last time out he now steps back up in distance considerably today and even though he showed he stays when finishing mid-division in the Cesarewitch may be handicapped out of it.

Following his Ebor success Dirar then flew his flag in higher company but found it a struggle, so a return to handicapping could be the key and he should be watched at 8/1 with VictorChandler. Last seen finishing eighth in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival he could improve for that, but has still yet to win off this mark.

Top weight Tastahil was a runaway winner of the Group Three Jockey Club Cup for Barry Hills and at 9/1 could be the value bet. He will have to carry a huge 9st 11lbs in this contest, but he has the class to carry it and running off the same mark as he won off at Newmarket last time could be the one they all have to beat and being drawn in stall three is another plus point.

Last year's winner Mamlook had a sketchy attempt at novice chasing and will run off a four pound higher mark in this year's renewal. However, the 11/1 on offer is a bit skinny, seeing he has been far than impressive on some of his racecourse appearances this year.

Mount Athos was a clear winner of a Dundalk handicap and is very much an unknown quantity. The four-year-old is 8/1 with Victor Chandler and has been subject of some support, but his task has been made much more difficult with the outside stall draw.

Of the others, Admiral Barry (10/1) could be an interesting each-way contender whilst La Vecchia Scuola is a bit hit-and-miss but on his day could be thereabouts at 14/1. Darley Sun, also at 14s is another to be wary of and Icon Dream at 33s could be over-priced, but Tastahil could well show his class and bag this tricky contest.
