There have been 86 entries for the Supreme Novices Hurdle in March and Cue Card heads the betting with just six weeks to go until the season's pinnacle - the Cheltenham Festival. The opening race of the Festival on Tuesday 15h March often produces horses that go on to achieve success in future races at Cheltenham, and Cue Card would appear to fit that bill as he is 5/2 favourite in the betting with Stan James bookmakers.
Colin Tizzard's 5-year-old also has an entry for the Champion Hurdle and a decision by his connections will be made nearer the time as to whether he will attempt to justify his ante-post favouritism against novices. He was a sensational winner at the Weatherbys Champion Bumper last year and won his first two races over hurdles this season - he won at Aintree in October and at The Open at Cheltenham in November where he beat Dunraven Storm, who is available at odds of 40/1 for the Supreme Novices. Cue Card was however second to last year's Supreme Novices winner Menorah in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham in December when he made the step up from novices.
Zaidpour is second favourite for the Cheltenham Festival curtain raiser and can be backed at odds of 8/1 with Stan James. He gave Willie Mullins a win in the Royal Bond Hurdle at Fairyhouse in December, while at the Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown he came runner up by a neck to First Lieutenant, who is a 25/1 punt for the Supreme Novices. The 5-year-old's chances of success come March will be a lot clearer after the weekend you would fancy as he is due to run in the Deloitte Novices Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday.
He will be joined by Hidden Universe at Leopardstown at the weekend who is also a 14/1 bet with StanJames.com. The 5-year-old has only had one start over hurdles but recorded a notable win on his debut as he won at Leopardstown in December and it will be fascinating to see how he gets on at the same course at the weekend. He also has a win in the Champion Bumper at Punchestown last April to his name and is a horse to keep an eye on.
There are a bunch of other contenders offered at the14/1 mark by StanJames.com, including Backspin who won the Challow Hurdle at Newbury in December. Jonjo O'Neills 6-year-old had been unbeaten until he lost out to Bob's Worth in the Neptune Investment Management Novices Hurdle on Cheltenham Festival Trials Day, eventually finishing fourth.
Paul Nicholls' Rock On Ruby also had his unbeaten run ended by Bob's Worth at Cheltenham as the six-year-old came runner up by two and a quarter lengths following a run of four consecutive victories. Also at odds of 14/1 is Minella Class, Nicky Henderson's Tolworth Hurdle winner who has won two out of three starts over hurdles.
