Tingle Creek Chase Tips: Sizing Europe the One to Beat in Sandown Feature

Nine runners have been declared for Saturday’s Grade One, Tingle Creek Chase over two miles at Sandown Park. Two of them, Tataniano and Kauto Stone, half brother to Kauto Star, will be representing Paul Nicholls, who has been the dominant trainer recently as far as this race is concerned winning it for the past six years running. Needless to say therefore that tips and money have been received in abundance for both entries, although it is Tataniano who is the more favoured of the two to make it a magnificent seven for the Ditcheat stable.

Tataniano, a seven year old has been backed into 11/4 with Ladbrokes from 5/1 earlier this week and is the preferred mount of stable jockey Ruby Walsh. Kauto Stone meanwhile will have Sam Thomas in the saddle, a jockey who won this race for Nicholls in 2007 when the late Twist Magic romped home for the first of his two wins in the race.

Walsh was on board Tataniano when claiming his biggest success, which came when the two landed the 2010 Grade 1 Maghull Chase over two miles at Aintree. However a muscle tear interrupted his progress last season during which he failed to win either of his two starts. Nicholls however now appears to have him right and was pleased with him after he won a decent handicap over 2m1f at Chepstow on his seasonal debut in October. Nicholls confirmed that he would improve greatly for that run and his experience just tips the balance in his favour rather than the young Kauto Stone.

It would appear that both Nicholls and Walsh believe that Kauto Stone will be better over a slightly longer trip. Certainly Nicholls pulled off a huge win last month at Down Royal, pitching him at the first tie of asking, into the Grade 2 Ladbrokes.com Chase over 2m4f which he won with consummate ease, by over six lengths from a very decent and experienced field. It was a very impressive performance on his debut for the stable where, somewhat inevitably, immediate comparisons were drawn up between the five year old and his famous half brother.

The one horse the two have to beat to maintain the Nicholls run of success in the race of course is the 2011 Champion Chase winner himself, Sizing Europe. He is said to be in great form at home by trainer, Henry De Bromhead and has been the subject of plenty of tips, particularly from Ireland this week. Last seen running a great race when second behind Quito De La Roque in the Grade One, JN Wine Chase over 3 miles at Down Royal a month ago, the nine year old will benefit by returning to the two mile trip and should certainly have the class to win. Sizing Europe is currently the 11/8 favourite for the race.

All that said, there has also been a few tips for the Phillip Hobbs entry, Wishfull Thinking, who has been backed into 3/1 with ladbrokes as a result. Hobbs is convinced that the drop in trip will do his 8 year old no harm at all, believing that he has the speed to take on the likes of Sizing Europe and has been very bullish regarding his chances all week.

A cracking race in prospect and although not ruling out the chances of 10/1 shot, Gauvain, or the 14/1 chance, I’msingingtheblues, the winner should come from the four featured above. Of those it has to be Sizing Europe as the most likely winner, but given the ‘Nicholls factor’ in this race it would come as no surprise to see one of his entries grab the glory.
