2017 Investec Derby Preview: Cliffs of Moher to storm to Classic glory at Epsom
Saturday 3rd June, 2017 - 4:30pm Epsom Downs - Investec Derby
A huge field of 19 runners will go to post for the hotly-anticipated 2017 Investec Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday afternoon, and it will be a real head-scratcher for punters looking to bag the winner of the fourth Classic of the season, as the bookmakers are going 4/1 the field for what is one of the most competitive renewals in recent years.
- Aidan O'Brien has won the Derby five times (saddles six runners)
- Permian has been supplemented for race after fine Dante win
- Cracksman aims to hand Frankel his first Classic win as a sire

Aidan O'Brien has a sensational record in the Derby having saddled the winner five times during his illustrious career, and the Ballydoyle will unleash a six-pronged attack on this year's renewal, and his flag-bearer looks to be the improving Cliffs Of Moher, who has been installed as the 4/1 market leader with Ladbrokes.
A battling winner of the Dee Stakes at Chester, the Galileo colt was made to work for his win in that race on the Roodee, but the bare form has to be given a real boost, as he was made to take the long route round the tight turns of Chester, but he picked up impressively as they turned for home that day, so the step up to 1m 4f here should play to his strengths.
He is the choice of stable jockey Ryan Moore, so that has to be a huge positive, but with only three career runs he is open to some more significant improvement, and providing Moore can gain a handy position in the early stages then this Irish challenger has to be the one they all have to beat, and he could mark excellent value at 4/1 with the Magic Sign.
John Gosden saddled Golden Horn to victory in this race two years ago, and he will send Cracksman to Epsom, and he is the other 4/1 favourite with bet365, and the son of Frankel has been touted as a real superstar in the making,
However, while he is unbeaten in two starts he was made to work when narrowly edging out subsequent Dante winner Permian in the Derby Trial at Epsom, and may struggle to frank the form with the exciting Permian, who has been supplemented for this race, and is a leading player at 11/1 with Ladbrokes.
Martyn Meade's Eminent launched into the Classic picture when winning the Craven Stakes earlier in the season, but 7/1 shot with BetVictor failed to land any sort of blow in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, and could find life tough again now returning to this top-class Group 1 level.
Godolphin will have a triumvirate of classy colts running and Best Solution (14/1) could well be the primary player here, as he was a fine winner of the Lingfield Derby trial earlier in the season, but Dubai Thunder, who is also a 14/1 shot with Sky Bet, propelled into the Derby picture on debut with a sublime 10-length win at Newbury, and is another exciting runner for the boys in blue.
Capri (12/1) and Venice Beach (14/1) are two more of O'Brien's runners that are worthy of mention, and it's the latter that makes appeal as he was a fine winner of the Chester Vase last month, and could be another open to improvement in what is a real intriguing renewal on Saturday afternoon.
Best Of The Rest
Joseph O'Brien knows what it takes to win the Derby as a rider, but he will aim to bag his first Classic win as a trainer and Rekindling will be aiming to bounce back from a disappointing fourth placed finish behind Permian in the Dante, but could outrun his 25/1 odds, while Khalidi (25/1) impressed last time out at Goodwood, and adds more depth to the race.
However, it could be a race dominated by the front few in the market, and it's Cliffs Of Moher that gets the shout, as he can sparkle on the biggest stage of all, and duly hand Aidan O'Brien a stunning sixth win in the Epsom Classic, which is the highlight on a star-studded card on the Downs.
