Somehow looks Somewhat The Value Play In Epsom Oaks Betting

Friday 3rd June 2016, 4.30pm - Investec Oaks (Epsom)

The biggest race of the season for the fillies takes place at Epsom on Friday as the best 3YO middle distance horses in training clash in the Investec Oaks and it once again should be a belter. The Derby is the main event on Saturday but the Oaks is looking pretty decent as well this season and we have a strong looking field of nine fillies engaged for the 1m4f contest.

  • Aidan O'Brien has trained the Oaks winner five times during his career, including two of the last four
  • 11 of the last 14 winners of the Oaks finished 1st or 2nd last time out
  • 10 of the last 14 winners had won over at least 1m2f previously to running in the Oaks

Ballydoyle Set to Invade Epsom

When it comes to picking Classic winners the only place to start is with Aidan O'Brien and once again Ballydoyle will have a strong hand in the Oaks as the trainer looks for a 6th win in the race. O'Brien has three entries for the Oaks on Friday with Minding the red hot favourite and clearly the one to beat as long as she takes the step up in trip well.

Minding was the brilliant winner of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket to mark herself out as a real star to follow this summer when it comes to the big races. She then went to the Curragh as a red hot favourite for the Irish Guineas only to be narrowly beaten by Jet Setting in a pulsating finish which did harm her reputation slightly.

It should be said though that both Jet Setting and and Minding pulled well clear of the field that day at the Curragh which could point to the winner being just as special and doing the Guineas double is always a tough ask for even the best horses. A lovely bred filly, Minding is the class of this field and provided the rain doesn't get in to the ground too much, she is without question the one to beat at 10/11 with Betway.

O'Brien also saddles Somehow (9/1) and Seventh Heaven (20/1) in the race with the former very much of interest from an each way perspective. Somehow wasn't particularly impressive in winning the Cheshire Oaks last time out but she did have trouble in running on the Roodee and given that she is already a winner on heavy, she does make some sort of appeal this Friday.

Best of the Rest?

Godolphin have an interesting Oaks filly this season in the form of the Charlie Appleby trained Skiffle and she very much falls into the 'could be anything' category. William Buick will be on Skiffle for just her third start and the vibes from the yard suggest that this could be a very nice horse indeed.

Turret Rocks (7/1) was a Group 2 winner as a juvenile for Jim Bolger and was last seen running a decent race when 6th in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on her only start this term. On the bare form she has plenty to find with Minding but she is bred to enjoy the extra trip and should improve plenty with that in mind.

She won a 1m2f Listed race last month at Goodwood in decent fashion down at 1m2f, she should enjoy the step up in trip and having been supplemented for Epsom, there are one or two who might fancy her to win the Oaks at a price of 6/1 with Bet Victor.

We should also mention that Architecture (11/1) is not without a small chance for classic winning trainer Hugo Palmer. Frankie Dettori will be on board the horse who was beaten by Seventh Heaven on her only start this season and it will be fascinating to see how that form works out here, although it would be a surprise if either horse was good enough to win.

Somehow The Oaks Selection

Aidan O'Brien perhaps doesn't have his strongest set of classic horses this season but he still has more than enough firepower to claim the Oaks this week. Minding is the class animal of the field with Ryan Moore on board but the rain falling is a slight negative and at a short price, we would prefer to look elsewhere. Somehow didn't impress at Chester but she won't mind some juice in the ground and with the extra trip expected to suit her perfectly, she is the value play.
