Arod can outclass rivals and retain Diomed Stakes crown at Epsom on Oaks Day
Friday 3rd June, 2016 - 3:10pm Epsom Downs - Diomed Stakes
Peter Chapple-Hyam's Arod tasted victory in the Diomed Stakes at Epsom Downs last year and the classy five-year-old will aim to retain the Group 3 crown on Friday afternoon, and he heads the betting for one of the feature races on a sparkling Oaks card, which will be shown live in front of the Channel 4 cameras.
- Arod won this race 12 months ago
- Three of the last four winners have been priced 4/1 or lower
- Andrea Atzeni rode the winner last year (rides Decorated Knight)

Arod A Cut Above His Rivals On His Day
Arod was destined for the top in the early part of his career, but he has often struggled for consistency throughout his racing career, but as he showed on this card a year ago that he is a special performer on his day, so if he can produce his best when it really matters then the 3/1 with Paddy Power to bag victory is huge value.
He has sometimes struggled to settle in his races, but he will receive significant weight from some notable rivals and having acted well around the tight turns of cambers of Epsom last year he certainly has the class to reign again, and is sure to strip fitter for his third place finish in Listed company at Ascot, so has to be the one to beat.
Knight Aims For Glory, But Custom May Lack Cutting Edge
Roger Charlton's Decorated Knight is one horse coming into this race in fine fettle having won a Goodwood Listed event, but he was behind Arod in their previous meeting at Ascot, so whilst he has improved he will find it tough to turn that form around here, and could be worth taking on at 7/1 with bet365 bookmakers.
David O'Meara's Custom Cut has been a model of consistency in black-type races over the last few seasons, but he will have to give weight away to all his rivals here, and he has found it difficult of late to get his head in front, so is another who is worth avoiding at 7/1 with Betfair Sportsbook.
Sovereign Debt is another who has to defy a penalty and Dandy Nicholls' charge is another that has been running decent races in good company, but often finding one or two too good, so makes little appeal at 7/1 with BetVictor, in a race that will whet the appetite for the Investec Oaks later in the afternoon.
Varian Ready For Business At Epsom, Whilst Tullius Marks Value
Roger Varian's Mindurownbusiness has been one of the shining lights on the all-weather and will now return to turf after a decent third placed finishing at the All Weather Championships in March, and whilst he has been installed as the 6/1 second favourite with Betfred Bookmakers he has to show he can perform to his best after a layoff, and may just need the run.
Of the others, Andrew Balding's Tullius was fourth in this race last year, and whilst he maybe in the twilight of his career the eight-year-old can play his part in the race and at 10/1 with bet365 is cracking each-way value, with Fanciful Angel (12/1) another adding depth to the race, but Arod can ease to victory if in the mood and hand favourite backers a win on Oaks day.
