Total Recall and American bid for glory in Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury
Saturday 2nd December, 2017 - 3:00pm Newbury - Ladbrokes Trophy
A sensational renewal of the Ladbrokes Trophy (formerly Hennessy Gold Cup) will take place at Newbury on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm as former Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Coneygree attempts to emulate the mighty Denman by carrying top weight to victory, but the Mark Bradstock-trained raider will face a whole host of notable rivals with the likes of Total Recall and American currently heading the betting.
- The last five winners have carried 11st or more
- Six of the last eight winners have been priced under 10/1
- The last ten winners have been aged below 10

Willie Mullins may have failed to win a British handicap chase in 11 years, but that has not stopped the bookmakers pricing up his charge Total Recall as favourite for this race, and having scooted to a facile victory in the Munster National last time out, the 5/1 jolly with bet365 looks to be a really progressive horse, and will be aiming to bag victory in this event, duly propelling him into the Gold Cup picture.
However, with that eye-bulging Mullins record then it could be Harry Fry's American that makes more appeal at the top of the market, as he was impressive in novice chases last season, and is another with bags of potential, and with Fry targeting this race for months, he could be one at 13/2 with Coral that is challenging for victory.
Nicky Henderson has a fine record in this race having saddled the likes of Bobs Worth (2012) and Triolo D'alene (2013) to victory, and the Seven Barrows maestro will unleash a strong team with last season's RSA Chase runner-up Whisper (8/1 with Unibet) sure to be popular, but it's Vyta Du Roc at the bottom of the weights that makes most appeal, as he still hasn't shown his best over fences, and if the 12/1 chance with Coral can kick on over fences this season then has to be a player.
Singlefarmpayment (7/1 with William Hill) was just touched off by Cogry (20/1 with Unibet) when the pair clashed at Cheltenham in October, but while the former makes more appeal here, he just seems to find one too good in these hot handicap chases, and it's Irish raider A Genie Inabottle who makes more appeal, as the 12/1 chance with Coral has won his last two, and will be another key player for the Emerald Isle.
Each Way Chances
Coneygree is the proven class act of the race, and if he can recapture the form he showed when storming to Cheltenham Gold Cup glory in 2015 then he is a player at 14/1 with Betfred, but he was pulled up in the Charlie Hall Chase in his first run of the season, and he seems to be a shadow of his former self, and it's easy to avoid him here in such a competitive contest.
Present Man (16/1 with BetVictor) was a gutsy winner of the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton last time out, but this is a tougher assignment, and it's hard to see him challenging, while Royal Vacation (16/1 with bet365) was a winner of the Kauto Star Novices' Chase last season, but that only came when Might Bite fell, so he may be another not up to this grade.
One eye-catching outsider is the Neil Mulholland-trained Carole's Destrier, who was a gallant runner-up in this race 12 months ago, as he was just touched off by Native River, but while he is 7lbs higher in this year's renewal, he is far too big at 25/1 with Betfred, and if he can produce his best form then he has to be the bet of the race, which should be a pulsating showpiece.
