Big Zeb Champion Chase Odds Shorten Following Smart Victory

Colm Murphy’s Big Zeb re-entered the Queen Mother Champion Chase picture this week following an emphatic victory in the Grade Two, Tied Cottage Chase at Punchestown where he had previous Grade One winner, Golden Silver 7 lengths adrift in second. Big Zeb has now earned quotes across the board of around 6/1, but punters can still snap him at 7/1 with Ladbrokes.

At the outset of the season great things had been expected from the 9 year old, particularly after he ran the great Master Minded to within a head in the Kerrygold Champion Chase last April. He followed that up with a solid victory in the Fortria Chase at Navan, before running inexplicably poorly when 4th and 33 lengths behind Twist Magic in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown in December.

Although this latest victory marks a significant improvement in Big Zeb, it is very hard to see how he can get the better of Twist Magic at Cheltenham, particularly after Twist Magic has won again since in equally impressive style in the Grade One, Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot last month.

It is certainly worth considering taking on race favourite, Master Minded in the race however. Although he has won the Queen Mother for the last two seasons he has only been out once so far this term and that was when running poorly behind Well Chief in the Connaught Chase back in November. Trainer, Paul Nicholls identified the fact that a rib injury hampered him that day but that he is now back to his best and was still being aimed at Cheltenham to defend his crown. With no form in the book, we think that the 13/8 about Master Minded is certainly worth taking on particularly with both Twist Magic and Big Zeb at such attractive prices and in great form.
