Bookmaker Sportingbet has been named as the new sponsor of the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The online bookie has taken over from Seasons Holidays as the backer of the feature race on Wednesday of the Festival and will stump up £2m in prize money for the two mile Grade 1 event until at least 2015. This means that a bookmaker sponsors each of the festival's four feature races, with Stan James sponsoring the Champion Hurdle on Tuesday for the first time along with long standing sponsors Ladbrokes and Totesport in the World Hurdle and Gold Cup respectively.
There's been a market move in the Champion Chase over the Christmas period, as last year's winner of the Queen Mother Big Zeb was an impressive winner of the Paddy Power Dial-a-bet Chase over in Leopardstown. The Irish trained ten year old has now gone four races without defeat following some intensive schooling on the jumping which had let him down in his more informative years. Sponsors Sporting Bet have him as a 7/2 best price second favourite for the Queen Mother in their non runner no bet market, with the favourite the two time winner of the race Master Minded, at odds of 15/8, also a best price. In fact, the new sponsor have gone best price on the first five in the betting, on horses such as Woolcombe Folly, Tataniano and last year's Arkle winner Sizing Europe.
Master Minded had an injury plagued season last year and could only muster up a fourth place finish when going for a hat-trick of wins in the Champion Chase last March. Paul Nicholls' eight year old certainly seems to have hit the ground running though this season, scoring impressively in both the Amlin 1965 Chase at Ascot and the Tingle Creek Chase, which was re-directed to Cheltenham this season due to the weather. Although it's probably too early to suggest that this season's Queen Mother Champion Chase will be a two horse affair, the betting certainly seems to suggest the two market leaders will take the beating. Sportingbet have gone non runner no bet on all four of the feature 2011 Cheltenham Festival races, which means that you can have a bet on the race now and if for whatever reason that horse doesn't run, your stake will be returned.
