Volvo World Match Play Championship Betting

The Volvo World Match Play Championship is a rare opportunity for top golfers from the European Tour to get involved in the match play format of the sport. It is also a rare and exciting chance for punters to get involved in betting on the tournament as a variety of betting markets are on offer - including odds for each match and in running betting.

It takes place during May in the European Tour calendar after missing 2010 because of sponsorship issues and it could well prove to be a permanent fixture for the top players from the tour. The event takes place at the Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Andalucia, Spain, and there is an impressive prize fund of 3.25 million(euros) on offer.

In terms of the match play format it bares comparison with the WGC-Accenture Matchplay tournament and even the Ryder Cup as players compete in 'match' situations and earn a point for each time they card a better score than their opponent on a hole.

It provides a rare opportunity to bet on such a tournament as it is worth looking at the odds for players with strong pedigree in the Accenture and Ryder Cup. A strong field is expected, although American players rarely enjoy success, with South African Ernie Els leading the way with most tournament wins as he has claimed the title seven times. Meanwhile, Englishmen Ross Fisher, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood have won the tournament in the past and that is well worth considering when looking at the odds.
