The Volvo Golf Champions was added to the European Tour Calendar in 2011 and it takes place each year in January. In 2012 it took place at the Fancourt Links Course in George, South Africa, while the 2013 renewal moved to the Durban Country Club.
The original tournament took place at a course designed by Colin Montgomerie called 'The Montgomerie Course' at the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain. The event offers a prize purse of $2.2 million with the winner receiving $283,330.
The 2011 tournament included a full field of European Tour players, but from 2012 the tournament is only be for an elite group of players that have won events on the European Tour. So it will signal the start of the year by putting the European Tour winners from the previous season up against one another, similar to the PGA Tour's Tournament of Champions, and it is an event that should provide plenty of excitement for the punter.
