The Hyundai Tournament of Champions is the first event of the PGA Tour season and has been opening the tour since 1953. It involves only players who have won a tournament during the previous season which ensures it is always a highly competitive field with some great betting opportunities throughout.
It is played on the island of Mauwi in Hawaii as players take to the Plantation Course on the Kapalua Resort and compete for the $5.6 million prize fund. The winner receives a cool $1.12 million and there have been plenty of big names who have upset the odds to win in the past. They include the likes of Geoff Ogilvy, who has a US Open win to his name and clearly enjoys the course in Hawaii and is worth following in the betting, and fellow Australian Stuart Appleby. While Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will always be in and around the top of the ante-post betting. Ernie Els has the remarkable best score in the tournament at 31 under in 2003 and that will take some beating.
In 2011 Jonathan Byrd upset the ante-post odds to win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions as he defeat Robert Garrigus in a play-off. Geoff Ogilvy had headed the betting in his seach for a third consecutive Champions win but fell short in his efforts to match compatriot Stuart Appleby's feat from 2004 to 2006.

The Sony Open in Hawaii is the next event on the US PGA Tour calendar after the Tournament of Champions and it is an event that has been dominated by American golfers in the past.
Zach Johnson, Ryan Palmer and David Toms have all won in the past and will be worth keeping an eye out for in the betting, while South African Ernie Els and Fijian Vijay Singh both have wins to ensure the tournament hasn't been completely dominated by the USA.
It is a good opportunity to have a bet on perhaps the slightly less fancied players at this early stage of the season as players try to shake off their rustiness and a few surprises could be on the cards.....
