Home / Golf / South African Open Championship
The South African Open Championship is held in December each year and is a prominent tournament on the South African Sunshine Tour. It has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour since 1997, and offers a 1million(Euros) prize purse.
The European Tour starts to get into full swing again following the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the odds for the tournament will no doubt reflect the form at the back end of the previous season as players look to steal an early march in the Race To Dubai.
It is one of the oldest national open golf championships in the world and it was first held in 1903. Black golfers were allowed to play in 1972, and it was originally held annually in January but it was changed to December in 2005 which meant there were two tournaments held that year.
Recent South African winners include Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman. But it is Gary Player who is the most successful player at this tournament with 13 victories.
The tournament has been dominated by some of the top names in South African golf, and it is well worth keeping an eye on the likes of Els, Goosen, Immelman and Schwartzel in the betting.

It takes place each year in January as part of the South African Sunshine Tour and the European Tour.
