The Mayakoba Golf Classic is the only PGA Tour event to be held in Mexico and takes place during February each year at the El Cameleon Golf Club in Cancun, Mexico. It makes for an interesting event to place bets on due to its timing within the PGA Tour calendar.
It has only been in existence since 2007 but takes place during the same week as the prestigious WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. This clash of fixtures means the Mexican event falls a distant second in priority for the top golfers on the tour, but this in turn means that there is plenty of scope for betting as the lesser known players attempt to upset the odds. Indeed during the very first Mayakoba Golf Classic in 2007 Fred Funk was 50 years old when he won it, which made him the oldest player ever to win a PGA Tour event.
There is a prize purse of $3.6 million on offer, with the winner netting $848,000, and there should be plenty of value in the market and it will no doubt be a case of finding a player outside of the world's best to provide that bit of quality. The odds will no doubt be very long on several players, and the punter could be on the lookout for another Fred Funk in the betting to provide value at long odds.
