Madeira Islands Open Betting

The Madeira Island Open is a chance for the lesser lights of the European Tour to shine and a chance for the punters to take advantage of some good value in the odds. The event rarely attracts the very top players from the tour so it is unlikely that there will be an outright favourite at single figure odds, so it could prove to be an ideal opportunity for betting.

One reason for its failure to attract the top players is the fact it is played during the same week as the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Andalucia, Spain.

It is an attractive event in its own right though as it takes place during May each year at Santo da Serra on the Madeira Islands in Portugal. There is a 700,000(euro) prize fund on offer and past winners include England's James Morrison, Scotland's Alastair Forsyth and Frenchman Jean Van de Velde, who will forever be remembered for his meltdown in the 1999 British Open.

Ricardo Santos claimed the Madeira Islands Open title and in the process became the first Portuguese winner of the European Tour in 20 years. Santos hit a stunning final round 63, including five birdes in the last seven holes, to beat Magnuss Carlsson by four shots.
