With the PGA Tour regular season finished and the European Tour drawing towards an exciting finish, the Australian Open is an exciting betting opportunity. It takes place at the Lakes Golf Club in Sydney during November each year and it has attracted some top American players from the PGA Tour in the past.
The tournament itself is one of the main events on the Australasia PGA Tour and the OneAsia Tour. It offers a prize purse of $1.5m (Aus), which is fairly modest in comparison to many of the major events on the American and European Tours, although it still attracts some top names.
The tournament carries rankings points in the Official World Golf Rankings and the winner of the Australian Open receives the Stonehaven Cup. In the past the winner has been one of several international stars but nowadays the winners board tends to be dominated by Australian players.
Adam Scott, US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy, Robert Allenby and Stuart Appleby are previous winners and they are likely to be available at short odds in the ante-post betting again this year, while Lee Westwood is the sole European winner after his success back in 1997.
| Year | Winner | Country |
| 2001 | Stuart Appleby | Australia |
| 2002 | Stephen Allan | Australia |
| 2003 | Peter Lonard | Australia |
| 2004 | Peter Lonard | Australia |
| 2005 | Robert Allenby | Australia |
| 2006 | John Senden | Australia |
| 2007 | Craig Parry | Australia |
| 2008 | Tim Clark | South Africa |
| 2009 | Adam Scott | Australia |
| 2010 | Geoff Ogilvy | Australia |
| 2011 | Greg Chalmers | Australia |
Greg Chalmers won his home open as he managed to hold off a late surge by a resurgent Tiger Woods. Chalmers won the title in 1998 and followed it up by finishing 13 under par after four rounds, although Woods went close by firing a final round 67 to finish just two shots back from Chalmers, with Woods still looking for a first tournament win in over two years.
Result:
1. Greg Chalmers (Australia) - 275 (-13)
2. John Senden (USA) - 276 (-12)
3. Tiger Woods (USA) - 277 (-11)
