American Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin announces who his four wildcard picks will be a week today and bookmakers are betting on who will join Pavin and the automatic eight qualifiers on the plane to Celtic Manor at the beginning of October. Qualifying for the US team ended after the PGA Championship two weeks ago which has left the American's three weeks to impress Pavin and get themselves a wildcard pick. One of those players almost certain to be picked is world number one Tiger Woods, who is as short as 1/50 with bookmaker Paddy Power to make the team announced on the 7th September. Woods inclusion will see a shift in the Ryder Cup odds, as the USA's price of 6/4 will surely tumble. Europe are currently the 4/6 favourites with the tie an 11/1 shot.

Corey Pavin has a less likely controversial decision to make next week, after Colin Montgomerie has been criticised for leaving out Paul Casey from the European team. Providing Pavin does pick Woods, who showed some good form at The Barclays this weekend, there's not a huge amount of difference between the remaining wildcard picks he has. Anthony Kim's participation is probably the biggest headache for Pavin, as Kim has struggled to re-discover form since returning from a thumb injury. Kim is a 5/4 shot with PaddyPower to be named as a wildcard, the fourth favourite behind Woods, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink in the betting.
In Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink, Pavin has the option to pick major winners with Ryder Cup experience in abundance, something which could be important at Celtic Manor. With the likes of Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson and Jeff Overton making their first appearances in the Ryder Cup, Pavin may make use of his wildcards by packing it with experience. Paddy Power go odds on that Johnson (1/5) and Cink (2/5) get the nod next Tuesday.
With the bookies suggesting the first three picks are 'nailed on', the betting is far more competitive for that fourth spot. Sean O'Hair's odds range from anything between 6/4 and even money to get the nod, whilst the exhuberant Rickie Fowler could be filed under 'lively outsider' at odds of 5/1 with Stan James. A win at this week's Deutsche Bank Championship for any of O'Hair, Fowler, Nick Watney, Lucas Glover or Jason Leonard could be enough to get them that final place on place to Celtic Manor.
Much has been made of Colin Montgomerie's wildcard picks on Sunday, after the Scot left out the English duo of Paul Casey and Justin Rose in favour of Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari. Such are the European qualification rules that a player such as Casey, ranked number nine in the world could miss out on automatic qualification. Justin Rose has been a two time PGA Tour winner this season but he too had to rely on a captain's pick and unfortunately missed out. After Edoardo Molinari won his second tournament of the year at Gleneagles on Sunday, it was no real surprise that he will be given a chance to team up with his brother at Celtic Manor. The Italian was a general 5/1 shot before the Johnnie Walker Championship to be named in the European Ryder Cup team, whilst Casey and Rose were both long odds on shots.
Luke Donald is a solid golfer who impressed Monty when he came over to Europe mid-season scoring a first, second and third place finish in the three tournaments he featured in. Donald also has an excellent Ryder Cup record, having won all foursomes matches he's featured in. The big talking point is Harrington's inclusion in the team. Harrington's form has suffered this season and finds himself just inside the top twenty players in the world ranking. His Ryder Cup form is also questionable but Montgomerie obviously feels he has something to offer and the bookmakers agree, with Stan James making Harrington their 6/4 favourite in the betting to be the top European wildcard at the Ryder Cup.
Europe will have six rookies making their first appearance in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor on the 1st October, that's half the team. Montgomerie has made light of this, claiming that 'rookie' status is less of a big deal than it may have been when he made his debut in the nineties. The Scot is probably right, as players such as Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer have plenty of experience behind them to revel in the atmosphere of the Ryder Cup. Unsurprisingly these two head the betting in Victor Chandler's top rookie in the European team market, with McIlroy the 9/4 favourite followed by Kaymer at 3/1. The Molinari brothers are both 4/1 shots whilst last year's World Matchplay winner Ross Fisher can be backed at a big price of 7/1.
