There's a stellar cast assembled for the Omega European Masters played at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre course in Switzerland. Whilst world number one Luke Donald heads the betting over in the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston on the PGA Tour, Lee Westwood lines up here on the Race to Dubai, alongside Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer, three heavyweights of European golf. McIlroy, who was last seen playing in the PGA Championship earlier this month, makes a return to the links this week, with one eye on the Race to Dubai rankings as the season heats up and also one eye on next year's Ryder Cup, with this tournament the first to contribute ranking points to next year's event in the USA.
McIlroy damaged his wrist just a couple of holes into his first round at the Atlanta Athletic Club, but arrives in Switzerland with a full bill of health, looking to win up in the mountains for the first time. The Northern Irishman is enjoying his best ever season thanks to his maiden major win in the US Open earlier this Summer. He finished tied for seventh here in 2007 and was beaten in a play-off in 2008 by Frenchman Jean-Francois Lucquin when still in search for his first win on Tour. At odds of 9/1, bookmaker Paddy Power make McIlroy their favourite at an industry best price.
Another black type favourite with the Irish firm is the world number two Lee Westwood, who like McIlroy makes a return to Crans-sur-Sierre for the first time in two years. Westwood won this event way back in 1999, finishing ahead of second place Thomas Bjorn that year, the Dane picking up his second win of the season at Gleneagles last weekend and priced up at 50/1 for back to back wins here. Westwood finished 8th in the PGA Championship and was tied for 23rd here in 2009. You can back the Englishman at odds of 10/1 with Paddy Power.
Third favourite is the German Martin Kaymer, who is bidding to refind some form ahead of the valuable end of season tournaments leading to Dubai. kaymer was a winner on Tour way back in January when he blitzed the field to land the Abu Dhabi Championship, before finishing runner up in the Accenture World Matchplay. Changes to his swing to enhance a right to left shot shape has left Kaymer with some uncharacteristically inconsistent results, missing the cut in the PGA Championship and with only one top ten finish to his name since the Spring. Kaymer's last appearance in Switzerland was back in 2007 where he missed the cut, so at odds of 16/1 he can easily be overlooked this week.
Matteo Manassero is an 18/1 chance this week, the Italian who already has two tour wins to his name at the tender age of eighteen. Manassero finished third here twelve months ago and the course is such that his accuracy over length won't be seen as a major handicap. Simon Dyson is next in the betting at 25/1, a real form horse the Yorkshireman has often played well at this time of year and has a habit of playing well for a good few weeks after winning a tournament, so will be looking to continue riding on the back of high which saw him win the Irish Open at the beginning of the month and have a good showing in the US PGA.
The last two winners of this tournament can be backed at 28/1 and 33/1 respectively in the shape of Alexander Noren and Miguel Angel Jimenez. The Swede Noren won here in 2010 and is enjoying a good summer, winning the Scandanavian Masters last month and will surely be one of the leading contenders here. Miguel Angel is having a quieter year than normal, but was brilliant in winning this tournament last year. At 33/1 he might be a tad short though and it would be a leap of faith hoping he could bounce back from some poor form this Summer.
In a real competitive field, the Molinari brothers shouldn't be ruled out. Francesco played solid at Gleneagles last week whilst Edoardo has previous course form here in Switzerland. The pair can be backed at 33/1 and 45/1 respectively, with BMW International winner Pablo Larrazabal another who could go well at a big price 45/1 with Paddypower.
