Ernie to take his foot off the gas in Shell Houston Open Betting

Ernie Els heads the betting for the Shell Houston Open this week as he goes searching for three straight wins in the US. The two time US Open winning South African has come out of a couple of years in the doldrums in a blaze of glory so far this season, having won the second WGC event of the season the CA Championship at the beginning of March and following it up in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the weekend. Ladbrokes make the 'Big Easy' a 10/1 chance to extend his winning run in Houston this week.

Els return to form has certainly taken punters by surprise but the South African rather stumbled over the line at a rain affected Bay Hill on Monday to win by two shots from American Kevin Na and young Italian Frencesco Molinari. With the Masters just one week away it's probably best to steer clear of Ernie this week.

Next best in the betting is Englishman Paul Casey, who won this tournament last year, his first title on the US PGA tour. Casey is a short looking 12/1 with Ladbrokes to follow up his win here and although he's been in good form this season, with three top ten finishes in as many events his odds look a little skinny considering the talent behind him in the betting.

Phil Mickelson is another player we couldn't have at the price of 12/1 with Ladbrokes. Mickelson played his way into contention in Florida at the weekend but faded badly on Sunday which gives us the feeling that he's not playing enough golf at the moment to maintain a challenge over a four day tournament. We'd much rather take a look at Padraig Harrington who has been playing well in the US so far this year and at 20/1 offers a bit of value. The Irishman followed up his third place finish behind Els in the WGC-CA event with another top ten finish with eighth in the Transitions Championship.

Another player we like the look of Vijay Singh at odds of 33/1 with Ladbrokes. The Fijian had a dreadful 2009 through injury but there have been glimpses of his old self so far this year, with a fourth place finish in the Honda Classic and an eleventh place behind Els in the WGC-CA Championship. Singh would be our main bet to continue the trend of older winners on tour, following on from Ernie Els and Jim Furyk.
