The PGA Tour heads to West Virginia this week for the Greenbier Classic at the Old White TPC. Stuart Appleby shot a superb final round of 59 last year to win the tournament and he is back to defend his title this year against a relatively thin field due to the upcoming Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship.
With so many players missing and carefully choosing which tournaments to play during this hectic schedule in the season, anyone could really pop up this week and win.
Phil Mickelson heads the betting market with Unibet at 10/1 but you can’t be sure on what you are going to get when backing ‘Lefty’ these days. Mickelson was great during his first nine holes of the final round of the British Open when he shot a 30 but then he fell out of contention when he gave up a number of shots on the back nine.
The field is dominated by Americans this week and Sergio Garcia is the sole European name sticking out at the top of the betting market at 16/1. The Spaniard has had a bit of a resurgence in form the last few months but just like Mickelson, you don’t know if you are going to get a great performance or a dreadful performance - or both – from him over the course of the tournament.
Jeff Overton, who is third in the betting at 19/1, was unlucky to be just one shot off winning this tournament last year after he posted superb low-scoring rounds of 64-62-66-67. He definitely likes the Old White course and will be looking to dominate it once again this year. Overton is also playing well this season and had a recent third-place finish at the AT & T National. Another player on a good run of form has been Brandt Snedeker and he can be backed at 29/1 this week. He has a win at the Heritage already this year and has two top-5 finishes to go along with that in recent months.
A player who has been consistently good this year is Webb Simpson and he is best-priced at 24/1 with Unibet.com this week. He is coming off a great performance at the Open Championship where he finished tied-16th which was his fifth straight top-20 finish. If he can keep up his form and play his consistent game, he should definitely contend in a weak field such as this.
One big outsider for this week could be Stuart Appleby at 99/1. He hasn’t had a great season and has struggled throughout 2011 but if there is any course that can get him out of his slump it is this one. He shot an amazing final round of 59 last time so he does have a good knowledge of the course.
