Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week's AT&T National at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania and so it is Nick Watney who starts as ante-post favourite. Woods actually hosts the event but won't be playing and there is a wide open feel to the odds, with Paddy Power making Nick Watney favourite at 12/1.
It is traditionally a tough course in Pennsylvania and one that suits the bigger hitters, with Watney tipped by many to take the title. The WGC-CA Championship winner has picked up three top 15 finishes in his last eight events, including a fourth and an eighth at the Players and HP Byron Nelson respectively, and was seventh here last year. However, the world number 15 tied 36th in this event in 2008 and 66th in 2009, and arrives on the back of a missed cut at the US Open - we fancy there is better value to be had elsewhere this week.
Hunter Mahan is the next best in the odds with Paddy Power at 16/1 after missing the event last year. Mahan too missed the cut at Congressional but he has three top 15s in five events and has a very fine record in the AT&T - runner up in 2009, tied 12th in 2008 and tied eighth in 2007 - and he looks the better value of the two at the head of the odds.
The pick to us looks to be another man who missed the US Open cut though - Ryan Moore. The 18/1 chance arrives after picking up three top five finishes already in 2011 and looking to go one better than his AT&T runner up spot last year. Moore was tied 11th in 2009 and he is bang in form after finishing a narrow runner up at the PGA Tour's Travelers Championship last week following rounds of 64, 63 and 63.
Meanwhile, Players Championship winner KJ Choi is available at odds of 20/1 as he looks to pick up the title he won back in 2007. He has only been back to Pennsylvania once since then though and missed the cut in 2009, and he is another who failed to make the cut at Congressional.
There are a couple of interesting each-way contenders with PaddyPower.com and Bo Van Pelt is a tempting 25/1. The big hitting Van Pelt has arrived on the back of four consecutive top 15 finishes after a tough start to the season saw him miss five cuts. He has appeared at the AT&T before having finished tied 11th last year and tied 54th in 2009.
Webb Simpson arrives in an equally rich vein of form after three consecutive top fifteens and seven top 25s in eight events. Simpson has yet to win a PGA Tour event but we fancy he should be in the mix after claiming three top fives during 2011.
Finally, reigning champion Justin Rose is back to defend the title he won by finishing 10 under par last year. Rose is priced 33/1 after picking up eight top fifteens this year, but he arrives on the back of three consecutive missed cuts and his confidence looks low.
