2016 Ryder Cup Betting Preview: USA are odds on to end Europe's recent dominance
It is almost here! The 2016 Ryder Cup takes centre stage at Hazeltine in Minnesota from Friday afternoon as Team USA bid to finally wrestle the trophy back from the clutches of Europe. The Europeans are bidding for a fourth win on the bounce in this biennial event but it is the Americans who appear to have the greater quality and experience on home soil...
|Friday 30th September - 12.30pm||Odds||Won/Lost||Bet|
|Ryder Cup Outright Winner|
|Tips||USA to win outright Best Bet||@ 8 / 13|
|Correct Score: USA to win 14.5 - 13.5||@ 14 / 1|
|Correct Score: USA to win 15.5 - 12.5||@ 11 / 1|
Europe have actually won eight of the last ten editions of the Ryder Cup but there is a perception that USA have the stronger team this time around. It is a fair point of view on the whole but it is worth noting that five of the European players are in the top-twelve of the current world rankings, compared to four of the USA team.
However, it is the depth of quality where Europe are lacking as their other seven team members are all ranked 30th or lower, while USA's lowest ranked player is wildcard Ryan Moore, who is ranked 31st.
Moore is one of just two Ryder Cup rookies in the home side, along with Brooks Koepka, whereas Europe are calling on six debutants - the most for a European away side since they pitched seven rookies into the defeat at the 'Battle of Brooklyn' in 1999.
The lack of experience could hurt Europe, who are a best price 2/1 for a fourth win on the bounce (Paddy Power), and it is USA who are worthy favourites for us at 8/13 (Bet Victor).
Ryder Cup Winner Odds:
Closer Than It Should Be
USA's greater quality should tell but we find it frankly bizarre that Bubba Watson has been included as a vice-captain at his own request after being overlooked for a playing role. Davis Love III should arguably be much stronger as a captain and say 'no' to the requests of a player who has divided opinion with his questionable attitude and personality in the past.
The presence of Ian Poulter as a vice-captain for Team Europe could also be an issue. Poulter has long been one to lead from the front with his tub-thumping playing style but we wonder how that will translate from the sidelines and he could yet prove to be something of a hindrance to the younger European players.
The likes of Chris Wood and Andy Sullivan haven't shown enough in recent months to suggest that they can rise to the occasion and Europe will be reliant on their more experienced team members, with Rory McIlroy (T3), Lee Westwood (T3), Martin Kaymer (T6) and Henrik Stenson (T6) boasting valuable experience of Hazeltine as they all top-tenned at the 2009 US PGA Championship here.
USA have the greater strength in depth though and success in the Ryder Cup is often cyclical, with Europe's time arguably coming to an end.
USA should be ready to get the 14.5 points they need to win but it will perhaps be closer than it should be. USA to win 14.5 - 13.5 can be backed at 14/1 (Betfair), which has been the final scoreline at five of the last ten Ryder Cups, and we will also take a punt on the 15.5 - 12.5 USA win at 11/1 (Bet Victor).
