Luke Donald has enjoyed a stellar 2011 season and the bookmakers have quickly priced him up for major success next year. The world number one is still without a major win during his career and Bet 365 go 2/9 on that he doesn't win a major in 2012 but there are some tempting odds on offer for him to break his duck.
Donald secured his place at the top of the PGA Tour money list with an inspired final round at the Children's Miracle Network Classic last week. Donald fired 64, including six birdies on the back nine, to take the money list title and he is all but assured of the European Tour money list title.
He leads Rory McIlroy by £1.14m and he has received further accolades this week as he was named the PGA Player of the Year and received the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average on the tour this season.
Donald would no doubt swap those awards for a major win though and he will be keen to become the first English major winner since Nick Faldo in 1996. The success of the Northern Irishmen on the tour in recent seasons will no doubt have made Donald even more hungry for that maiden major win.
He is available at odds of 10/3 to win exactly one major in 2012, with many still questioning the validity of his number one ranking when he hasn't won one of the major tournaments.
Donald is currently 18/1 with Bet 365 to win the US Masters in 2012 and he has enjoyed some of his best golf in majors at Augusta. He tied for third in 2005, his joint best major finish along with his tied third in the USPGA in 2006, and he was right in the mix in 2011. He finished tied fourth, four shots behind Charl Schwartzel, this season.
Meanwhile, Bet 365 offer industry best priced odds of 16/1 for Donald to win the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes next season. Donald didn't play at the course when the Open was last played there in 2001 and he missed the cut at Royal St George's this season.
He does have a best finish of tied fifth at the British Open though and again he would have to try and emulate Nick Faldo, who was the last English player to win the tournament back in 1992.
Furthermore, Bet365.com go 20/1 that Donald wins two majors in 2012, a feat not achieved since Padraig Harrington in 2008, while three majors is currently a juicy 80/1. Tiger Woods was the last to win three in a season back in 2000, and no player has ever achieved the Grand Slam in the modern era, with Donald a huge 250/1 to become the first - although for now he would be more than happy with just the one.
