Team USA Tipped To Be Too Strong For The Internationals At The Presidents Cup

The FedEx Cup play-offs came to an enthralling conclusion on Sunday and there is no let-up in the live golf action on Sky Sports as The Presidents Cup gets underway on Thursday, with Team USA taking on Team Internationals (excluding Europe)...

Tips Team USA win with -3.5 handicap    Best Bet @ 5 / 6
Brooks Koepka Top American @ 11 / 1
Louis Oosthuizen Top International @ 15 / 2

Dominant USA

The USA have long dominated this tournament as they have won nine of the eleven editions, with their sole defeat coming in Melbourne way back in 1998 before they then tied in South Africa in 2003. Since then, USA have won six Presidents Cups in a row and they are 3/10 for victory at Liberty Golf National in New Jersey this week.

It is difficult to look beyond the USA as their twelve-man teams features six of the world's top-twelve ranked players, including three of the leading four in Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

In contrast, the International Team's highest ranked player is the brilliant Hideki Matsuyama and his form has dipped of late, which is a concern as USA are 6-0 in the Presidents Cup at home.

In fact, USA have won all six editions of this event on home soil by an average margin of 5.2 and they are 5/6 to cover 3.5 in the handicap market (Paddy Power).
Match Odds:

Top American

Team USA's captain, Steve Stricker, has named Phil Mickelson, the Presidents Cup all-time leading points scorer with 29, as one of his two captain's picks and he has an enviable array of talent in his side.

Spieth (9/2) and Johnson (5/1) head the market to be Top American Player but we prefer to search for a bit of value in this particular market and we will be swerving Rickie Fowler (13/2) and his disappointing record in team match play, while Patrick Reed (15/2) only took 1.5 points from his four matches at the 2015 Presidents Cup.

Justin Thomas (13/2) is the form man following his FedEx Cup win bit his record in match play golf isn't great ahead of his Presidents Cup debut and we prefer to side with Brooks Koepka at 11/1 (Bet Victor).

The US Open winner has been model of consistency since securing his maiden major title, finishing in the top-twenty in six of seven subsequent events, and he showed his aptitude for this format when starring in the last Ryder Cup. Koepka went 2-1 in team match play at the Ryder Cup and his career singles record in match play is a brilliant 9-4.

Top International

As for the International Team, Jason Day (5/1) and Adam Scott (6/1) have had their struggles this year but Day has finished in the top-25 when The Barclays was held at Liberty Golf National in 2009 and 2013, with Scott winning that tournament four years ago.

The course has been renovated since it hosted The Barclays (now known as The Northern Trust) though and Hideki Matsuyama is 5/1 to be Top International Player this week despite a disappointing 44.44% win-rate in previous Presidents Cup appearances.

Instead, we prefer to side with Louis Oosthuizen (15/2 with Betfred) and his six points from ten previous Presidents Cup matches (5-3-2). The South African has won his past five team match play outings in a row (including four in partnership with Branden Grace) and his singles career record in match play reads: 17-10-2.

The world number 21 is a fine match play exponent and he has enjoyed a decent year in the big events, tying 2nd at the Players and the USPGA Championship.
