Players on the PGA Tour will no doubt welcome four days on the Old White Course at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia this week. The event offers a huge contrast to the difficult conditions players faced at the British Open a few weeks ago and Open Championship runner-up, Phil Mickelson, is the 8/1 favourite in the betting with Ladbrokes.
The Old White course saw a remarkable inaugural tournament last year as Stuart Appleby fired an eleven under par 59 on the final day to win the tournament and it could well be another low scoring tournament, despite some amendments to the layout this time around.
For Phil Mickelson, it couldn't get much tougher than the Open Championship at Sandwich last time out and the way he coped with conditions in England suggests he will be full of confidence whatever the conditions. He did miss eight three-foot putts at the Open and he could have been looking at a maiden Open win without those, but he did ensure a fifth top ten in fourteen outings. At 8/1, he looks a little on the short side but if he is at his very best it is difficult to back against him.
Sergio Garcia also coped admirably with conditions at the third major of the year as he continues his remarkable return to form. He finished tied ninth at Sandwich to make it two consecutive top ten finishes in majors. Take into account the fact he has actually notched top ten finishes in his last three outings and eleven top 25s, with just one missed cut in America, in 25 outings this year he could provide great value at 16/1 with Ladbrokes.com.
Away from the 'big two' there is a host of players with experience of last year's inaugural tournament, but how much that will matter remains to be seen if the Greenbrier plays as easy this time around.
Charles Howell III is available at 20/1 after finishing tied ninth in 2010, and with three consecutive top fives before the British Open, we fancy he could be well worth an each-way look. Also at 20/1 is the similarly consistent Webb Simpson, who has five consecutive top-sixteens to his name, although he did miss the Greenbrier cut last year.
Brendon de Jonge has been a model of consistency and he too looks decent each-way value at 251/ in the betting, particularly after he finished third last year and has picked up a seventh at the John Deere and tied thirteenth at the Viking recently.
Meanwhile, Jeff Overton will bid to go one better this time after he finished second last year, when he was only beaten by Appleby's stunning 59. Overton tied for third on his last USA start at the AT&T National and is priced 25/1, while in stark contrast reigning champion Appleby has endured a dismal 2011 and is a huge 100/1 punt to defend his title.
