A field of 48 is set to gather for the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Malaysia. The tournament is a featured event on the PGA Tour and involves no cut, with defending champion Ben Crane sharing favouritism alongside Brandt Snedeker at 14/1 in the betting with Boylesports.
There is a $6.1m prize purse on the line and Crane in particular will be looking to round off an excellent couple of months. He won the McGladrey Classic in fine style last time as he birded eight of the last eleven holes in regulation and then went home to witness the birth of his third child. He will certainly be on a high and he knows how to win this tournament after defeating Brian Davis by a shot last year.
Snedeker will be keen to launch a challenge though as the highest ranked player in the field. The world number 27 has enjoyed an excellent year, during which he has won The Heritage and has racked up seven top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour. He was tied for sixth in the Bridgestone Open in Japan last time as he made it four top sixteen finishes from his last seven appearances.
Camilo Villegas has also been in fine form of late, with Boylesports offering the Colombian at 16/1 in the betting to win the tournament. Villegas endured a dismal first half to the year but he picked up three top tens in his last four outings and will be well fancied to continue that form this week.
Villegas is joined by Ryan Moore at 16/1 in the betting after the American finished tied fifth last year.
There could be a touch more value to be found this week though and Jason Dufner looks to offer a tempting bet at 25/1 with Boylesports.com. Dufner should enjoy the fact that there isn't a cut in Malaysia as on the last eight occasions where he has played all four rounds of a tournament he has notched seven top 15 finishes, included a tied 13th at the Tour Championship.
Dufner may have missed six of the last ten cuts but he has finished in the top 15 in three of those and we fancy he could thrive without the pressure of having to make a cut.
Carl Pettersson is also available at 25/1 and he has some unfinished business at this tournament. Pettersson was second after the third round here last year but a final round of 73 saw him end in tied 15th.
Meanwhile, Vijay Singh could prove tempting at 33/1 after tying for 16th in the Tour Championship recently. The veteran Fijian returns to Malaysia, the scene of his first professional tour win in the 1980s, and his know-how in these conditions could prove important.
Thonghcai Jaidee (33/1) also has plenty of experience of Malaysia after he finished tied 17th in the Malaysian Open earlier this year. He is the top ranked player from the Asian Tour after finishing in the top 25 in his last two events, although he could only finished tied 29th here last year.
