Bernhard Langer favourite for glory at the 2017 Senior Open Championship

The 31st Senior Open Championship explodes into action on Thursday as the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club (Wales) hosts the tournament for the second time in four years. The picturesque seashore course will provide a thrilling Mid Glamorgan links challenge for the 144-strong field, which in turn will make for an engrossing four days of golf.

Paul Broadhurst heads to Wales bidding to defend the Senior Claret Jug he hoisted at Carnoustie last year. In 2016 Broadhurst became the first Englishman to triumph in the event for a whopping 30 years (since Neil Coles in 1987), but he’s out at 45/1 to become the event’s first-back-to-back winner since Irishman Christy O’Connor Jnr (1999 & 2000).

Back in 2014 when the Senior Open Championship was last held at Royal Porthcawl it was Bernhard Langer steamrolled to victory, as he smashed the field by a staggering 13 shots, with all four of his rounds in the 60s. In the process the double Masters champion smashed a series of records, which included carding an astonishing 18-under-par 266 - the lowest in the competition’s history.

At this level the German’s record is quite staggering, having bagged nine Senior major championships, including two this year alone in the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship. In a total of 45 Senior major appearances he claimed top-23 finishes, which includes seven victories in his last 19 showings, and 11 top-3 standings in his last 20.

Langer, 60 in August, is short at 7/2 (Bet365) but given his stunning form at Senior level, combined with his astonishing victory at Royal Porthcawl in 2014, he’s the obvious choice to triumph, making it difficult to look past him in the betting.

However, this is the sport of golf we are talking about, and anything can happen.

2012 Senior Open winner Fred Couples will no doubt be a popular pick at 6/1, while Miguel Angel Jimenez - who has three top-8 Senior Open finishes in three years - is next in the running at 8/1.

In the chasing pack we have the likes of Scott McCarron, Tom Lehman, and Joe Durant, while Colin Montgomerie can be backed at 22/1. The Scot finished a distant runner-up to Langer in 2014, followed by a 3rd in 2015, only to miss the CUT in his most recent appearance, but on his return to Wales he’ll be gunning for glory.

Local favourite Phillip Price, who lives just 30 minutes away, will be appearing in his first Senior Open Championship, and he arrives in Wales in top form having won the WINSTONGolf Senior Open in Germany earlier this month, and he can be roared onto victory at 40/1, whereas a top-5 finish at 8/1.

Those looking for a few outside punts can find Tom Watson at 150/1, Jose Maria Olazabal at 160/1, Ian Woosnam at 250/1, and finally Sir Nick Faldo, the most successful British golfer of all time, at 350/1 to celebrate turning 60 in style.
