Sixteen players remain in the hunt for the first World Golf Championship event of the 2011 season in Arizona on Friday in the third round of the WGC-Accenture World Matchplay at Dove Mountain. Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey were amongst the big names to exit in Thursday's second round, with runner up for the past two seasons Casey losing to Australian Jason Day, Mickelson put to the sword by youngster Ricki Fowler and a misfiring Westwood losing a tight match to Nick Watney. Westwood could now relinquish his world number one ranking to Martin Kaymer, who came through his second round match with Justin Rose on the second extra hole and now heads the betting for the title with bookmaker William Hill at 13/2.
Kaymer now faces American Hunter Mahan who was gifted a second round win by Robert Karlsson, who missed several short puts on the back nine to lose 2 up. Kaymer is now 8/13 to beat Mahan in Friday's third round and set up a quarter-final match against either Ben Crane or Miguel Angel Jimenez. The veteran Spaniard is in fine form having knocked out Ryan Palmer in the second round and clearly confidence has been buoyed by his first ever Ryder Cup singles win last Septemeber at Celtic manor. However, he faces the American Crane, who was in good form coming into this tournament and absolutely demolished Rory McIlroy in the second round winning 8&7. Crane is 4/6 to beat Jimenez and that looks like a decent bet when putting into a treble with Ryan Moore to beat Nick Watney and Jason Day to beat JB Holmes.
Watney is a 4/6 chance to beat Moore, but was helped along by Westwood in round two, who missed umpteen puts within ten feet to eventually lose out on the final hole. Moore on the other hand breezed past KJ Choi 5&4 in round two and also beat HSBC Champions winner Francesco Molinari on day one. At odds against, Moore looks a value bet to stick in your treble at 6/5. William Hill can't split Jason Day and JB Holmes in their match in the Sam Snead bracket. Day has been impressive beating Kim of Korea in round one and then stunning tournament favourite Paul Casey 4&2 in round two. Holmes has also been playing well, having been a late replacement for Tim Clark the American has beaten Camilo Villegas and Ernie Els on his way to the third round. However, Day has been playing the best golf over the first two rounds and a win here at odds of 9/10 could set up a potential quarter-final clash with fellow Aussie and two time winner of this event Geoff Ogilvy. You can back Day, Moore and Crane to win at odds of just under 7/1 with William Hill.
Ogilvy in fact was one of the main market movers following day two of the WGC Accenture Matchplay. The Australian beat Tiger Woods conqueror Thomas Bjorn on the 18th green to set up a clash with Bubba Watson in the last sixteen and can be backed at 8/1 third favourite with Hills in the outright betting. Sandwiched between he and Martin Kaymer is 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell. The man from Northern Ireland has never really faired to well in this competition before but his growing status in the game has seen him breeze past Ross Fisher and Heath Slocum. McDowell is 7/1 to win the tournament but he also looks like a good bet to come out on top in the Ben Hogan bracket and reach the semi-finals. McDowell is 13/8 to do so but it might be a decent option to double up with Martin Kaymer to win the Gary Player bracket at 6/4. A double on these two would pay around 6/1 and is worth a bet.
