The European Tour heads to Bahrain for the first time this week as the Volvo Tournament of Champions gets underway on Thursday. The maiden event at the Royal Golf Club in Bahrain hosts plenty of talent and it is world number nine Paul Casey who heads the betting to win the tournament with Victor Chandler bookmakers at industry best priced odds of 8/1. But Padraig Harrington could be worth watching as he looks to rectify his disqualification in Abu Dhabi last week.
The course at the Royal Golf Club is known as the 'Montgomerie Course' as Colin Montgomerie helped design it and it will be interesting to see how the former Ryder Cup captain gets on. Victor Chandler don't appear to rate his chances as he is a huge 125/1 outside punt and with his best years behind him there looks to be plenty of value elsewhere in a strong playing field.
Paul Casey finished eighteenth at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship last week and that was a tournament he won in 2009. He had a disappointing 2010 however and his performances in the Middle East weren't the best so it might be better to look elsewhere this week. Padraig Harrington will be keen to atone for his error and the slightly archaic rules that saw him disqualified last week after signing for his card of 65. He looked in excellent nick in hitting a first round 65 and at industry best priced odds of 12/1 he might be well worth a look as he looks for redemption.
Robert Karlsson is offered by VictorChandler.com at odds of 10/1 for what will be his first appearance of 2011. He has excellent pedigree in performing in the Gulf as he won the Qatar Masters and Dubai World Championships last year, and the leading European Tour money winner of 2008 will be keen to get his season off to a flyer.
Elsewhere, Francesco Molinari is offered at odds of 11/1 and he is fast building a reputation as being the tour's 'Mr 'Consistent' after another top ten finish last week. He can be backed to place at odds of 2/1 with VCBet. Ian Poulter struggled in Abu Dhabi however as he missed the cut and he is yet to hit his straps, but at industry best priced odds of 12/1 he should be lurking around the top of the leaderboard.
Meanwhile, this week will see the return to the tour of Sergio Garcia who will be looking to improve on a dismal 2010. He produced just one top ten finish last year and after an extended break he could well come back fresher and revitalised. He is an outside 30/1 to return with a win and his odds of starting with a top ten finish are interesting at 11/5 with Victor Chandler.
