There's an added betting angle to this week's Johnnie Walker Championship at Glenagles on the Race to Dubai, becuase it is the last qualifying tournament for the European Ryder Cup Team. As things stand, there's still two places not entirely nailed down on the European points list, which makes winning this week's tournament all the more important for some of the players participating. Bookmaker William Hill has put up some odds on who will make the European Ryder Cup team, so lets have a look at the main protagonists and how they can still qualify this week.

The European Ryder Cup team qualification is a little more complicated, due to the fact that so many of Europe's top golfers split their play between the European and PGA tours. Therefore, there are two qualification lists for Colin Montgomerie's European team, the world points list and the european points list. Both lists date back to September 3rd last year, giving the players plenty of opportunities to qualify. The top four players from the world points list qualify, based on their world ranking points over the last year. Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell have all qualified via the world points route, as qualifying finished last weekend.
This leaves us with the remaining five places to make the nine automatic qualifying places in Colin Montgomerie's team. Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher have qualified, although Fisher heads the betting for this week's Johnnie Walker Championship. Italian Francesco Molinari sits seventh on the qualifying list and also plays this week with his place assured. Peter Hanson practically secured his place on the team in 8th after winning the Czech Open at the weekend, but it is Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez who currently occupies the precarious 9th place spot going into this weekend.
Jimenez has cancelled a planned trip to attend his nephew's wedding in order to nail down qualification for the Ryder Cup. The Spaniard has two wins to his name on the Race to Dubai this year, but Jimenez needs at least a top four finish this week to assure him a place at Celtic Manor. Of the players just outside the list, Paul Casey and Padriag Harrington are playing in The Barclays this week, so will have to rely on a captain's wildcard pick to make the team, just as English duo Justin Rose and Luke Donald will have to. Of those players turning up at Gleneagles this week, Simon Dyson, Ross McGowan and Alvaro Quiros all have the opportunity of leapfrogging Jimenez if results go their way.
Such are the ramifications of this week's finishing positions, it's no surprise really that William Hill go as short as 1/50 that Jimenez will make Europe's Ryder Cup team. The firm however also go odds on that Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Justin Rose make the team, which as explained cannot happen.
Of the players in action at Gleneagles this week, Edoardo Molinari is a 5/1 shot to make the team with William Hill, but he most probably also needs to rely on a wildcard pick. This might actually not be a bad bet, as he and his brother, who has already qualified for the team won last year's World Cup in fine style and Colin Montgomerie might fancy the pair in the fourballs and foursomes at Celtic Manor.
Englishman Ross McGowan was a long term incumbant of the automatic spots following a fine finish to 2009, but form and injury in recent months have seen him slip out of the reckoning. Providing Jimenez doesn't finish in the top four places this week, a top two finish for McGowan could be enough for him to make his Ryder Cup debut. McGowan is a 12/1 shot with WilliamHill to make it, just as Simon Dyson and Alvaro Quiros are, but they both require a win in Scotland.
It's sure to make for an entertaining weekend at Gleneagles, with the conclusion Colin Montgomerie announcing his three wildcards on Sunday evening. Padraig Harrington and Paul Casey look assured of a pick and are 1/16 and 1/8 to be named in the European twelve man team.
