The biggest event on the European Tour gets underway on Thursday at Wentworth in Surrey as the tour's top players gather for the BMW PGA Championship. It has long been regarded as the most prestigious event on the tour and it is reflected in the odds as a list of stellar names compete, with Luke Donald 7/1 favourite according to Victor Chandler.
Wentworth also hosts the four current major champions and current world number one Lee Westwood. Donald could have taken Westwood's number one spot with victory in last week's Volvo World Match Play Championship but eventually lost out to Ian Poulter in the final.
Donald has been in scintillating form of late, finishing in the top of ten in each of his last eight events, but it is difficult to back him at single figure odds this week. He has an exceptional short game but Wentworth has suited those with a long driving game in the past, which brings some other names into play.
Lee Westwood is an industry best of 9/1 with VCBet after reaching the last 16 of the Match Play championship. He rates this week's event as the 'fifth major' and will be keen to continue his recent improvements in form that saw him finish 11th at the US Masters and win the Ballantine's. He looks to have every chance this week and it would be a huge surprise if he wasn't in the mix .
Martin Kaymer, a best price of 16/1, is another that is looking to move back into form after a tough start to the year and a recent 19th at The Players and a semi-final spot in the Match Play suggests he is moving in the right direction and could be there or thereabouts come Sunday.
Rory McIlroy is alongside Kaymer at 16/1 but we fancy he is still getting over his Masters meltdown as he has since missed the cut at Wells Fargo and lost to Graeme McDowell in Match Play action last week. McDowell is 20/1 this week but he looks best left alone after missing three cuts in his last five events and his best performance at Wentworth in eight attempts is a sole top 20 finish.
Last week's Match Play winner Ian Poulter is another that is probably best avoided, even at tempting odds of 33/1 with VictorChandler.com, as he has missed the cut in seven if nine BMW PGA Championships.
Indeed it is well worth looking out for those with decent form at Wentworth as the tournament has provided plenty of outside punts as winners in recent years. Defending champion Simon Khan came from nowhere to win last year and he is 150/1 this week after claiming a runner up spot and four top 25 finishes here.
Elsewhere, 2009 winner Paul Casey is another that looks to provide value at 28/1 despite missing his last two cuts and crashing out of the Match Play at the round robin stage this season. While Anders Hansen looks a very decent each way chance at odds of 45/1 as the Dane has won the title twice before (in 2002 and 2007) and has two top five finishes on top of that.
