There is a strong home-grown presence for this week's Australian PGA Championship at the Hyatt Regency Coolum in Queensland. It is home favourite Adam Scott who heads the odds at an industry best price of 7/1 with Boylesports, although John Senden could offer some value, with Ricky Fowler the shortest priced of the players from abroad.
The tournament boasts a strong field this year as several players from the International and USA teams from last week's Presidents Cup remain 'Down Under'. Scott enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular, week for the International team as the world number seven saw his side defeated. On a personal level though, Scott has been enjoying some fine form as a tied fourth at the Australian Open ensured his fourth top ten in seven outings.
7/1 looks a touch on the skinny side this week though and it is fellow Aussie Jason Day who is next best in the odds at 9/1 with Boyles. The world number eight makes his first appearance in Queensland for several years and the recent form of the US Open and US Masters runner-up looks shaky as he took just one and a half points from his five Presidents Cup matches.
Day looked exhausted by the end and Geoff Ogilvy looks to represent the better value of the two 9/1 shots. Ogilvy can boast course and recent form as he lost in a play-off in this tournament last year to follow up a tied seventh in 2009, while he impressed at the Presidents Cup and was tied fourth at the Australian Open.
Aaron Baddeley is another of the home contingent and he is available at odds of 12/1 with Boylesports after finishing tied third at the Tour Championship and tied ninth at the Australian Open.
For a touch more value this week though it could be worth a punt on John Senden at 14/1 with Boylesports.com. Senden has picked up three top tens on the US PGA Tour this year and was runner up at the BMW Championship recently. Furthermore, his Australian PGA record is excellent as he finished tied sixth in 2008, runner up in 2009 and tied tenth last year.
Senden looks a potential winner, while there are a host of past winners in the field as Robert Allenby, winner in 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2009, is a 25/1 shot and should provide each-way interest. However, he did lose all of his matches at the Presidents Cup and missed the cut at the Australian Open.
Meanwhile, defending champion Peter Senior, who also won this tournament in 2002, looks great value at 50/1 and he looks worth an each-way punt as he looks to roll back the years after winning $1.4m on the senior tour this season.
There hasn't been a winner of this tournament from outside of Australia since New Zealander Grey Turner in 2009 and Ricky Fowler is the shortest priced of the foreign contingent at 14/1. Fowler picked up his first career win at the Korea Open recently, although we fancy John Senden could provide the Queensland crowd with yet more home cheer.
