The PGA Tour's play-off season begins with The Barclays at the Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey. The venue rotates each year so it is difficult to lay too much weight behind course form but there are some strong points to note for a tournament in which Luke Donald heads the betting at 12/1 with Boylesports.
The world number one has enjoyed a stellar year as he has notched thirteen top ten finishes, although the nagging doubts about his position as the best in the world will remain until he wins a major title. The Englishman will have to wait until 2012 for his next chance at a major, although he should be in the mix for a win here.
Next best in the betting is Steve Stricker at 16/1 and the American looks to have a great chance of adding to his Memorial and John Deere tournament wins from 2011 so far. Stricker excels during play-off season as he was Barclays champion in 2007 when he fired a 16 under 268, and he has finished tied second and tied third in each of the last two renewals. He arrives with ten consecutive top 20 finishes under his belt, including a tied twelfth at the USPGA Championship. Stricker had led on the opening day of the final major of the year thanks to a first round 63 and we fancy his chances this week.
Adam Scott joins Stricker at 16/1 as he continues his fine upsurge in form since changing to the long putter. He also has Tiger Woods' former caddie Steve Williams alongside him now and the pair have worked well together so far, winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and securing a top ten finish at the PGA.
There are then a clutch of 25/1 shots in the betting as Nick Watney bids to follow up his AT&T National win from earlier this year, while Jason Day will look to continue his fine recent form. The Australian has six top tens in 2011, including runner-up places at the US Masters and US Open, and he could well continue to thrive on American soil after finishing tied fifth in this event last year.
Webb Simpson is also a 25/1 chance after the up-and-coming American picked up his first PGA Tour win last week as he took the Wyndham title.
Defending Barclays champion Matt Kuchar is a 28/1 punt, although a very tempting each-way punt could come in the form of 80/1 shot Vijay Singh with Boylesports.com. The Fijian thrives at The Barclays as he is a four-time champion - 1993, 1995, 2006, 2008 - and he showed he can still mix it despite his advancing years when tied fourth at the Wyndham last week.
