World number three, Phil Mickelson heads the field for this Waste Management Phoenix Open at Scottsdale this week, looking to regain his world number two ranking, lost recently to the in form but absent, Steve Stricker. Mickelson who has won this tournament twice, most recently in 2005, has been made the 8/1 favourite by PaddyPower to make it a hat trick.
Although absent from the WGC Matchplay event last week, Mickelson showed useful form in the AT&T event a fortnight ago where he tied for eighth place behind AT&T back to back winner Dustin Johnson.

Interestingly, tied second at the AT& T was JB Holmes, who has also won this tournament twice in both 2008 and 2006. He seems in great form at present and was also third in the Northern Trust Open a month ago. It often pays to back players in form and there are few in better form than this man currently. Newly crowned WGC World Matchplay Champion and new world ranked number five, Ian Poulter heads the European challenge, but whether or not his prodigious efforts last week will take their toll on his form this week remain to be seen. Poulter, nonetheless can backed at 22/1. Perhaps a better bet for a European victory this week lay with top German, Martin Kaymer. Already a winner on the European tour this year, Kaymer has the game and the consistency to perform well at Scottsdale and will come to the tournament with very strong each way claims with odds of around the 18/1 mark.

2009 Phoenix winner, Kenny Perry, comes to the tournament having shown some mixed form so far this year. He was a solid sixth place at the SBS tournament at the beginning of the year but finished down the fields in his last two tournaments. That said, Perry, is a regular winner on the US tour, who can strike often without warning. We like the look of his odds of 33/1 and believe he has solid each way claims off that mark.
