The 2012 Race To Dubai gets underway with the Africa Open on 5th January and the bookmakers are struggling to separate Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald in the odds to win the tour's money title. The pair enjoyed a thrilling battle last term, with Donald edging it in the end, although Paddy Power make McIlroy their 4/1 favourite.
McIlroy managed to take the race to the season ending Dubai World Championship last term as he enjoyed a thrilling run of form. McIlroy racked up six top five finishes in seven events to briefly threaten Donald's hopes of winning both the PGA Tour and European money lists. Donald held his nerve but US Open champion McIlroy is expected to step up his game further this season and could well be in the frame for a few more major wins.
Donald is still searching for his first major win but he showed a consistency that was unmatched in world golf in 2011. The Englishman won both the PGA Tour and European Tour money list titles, an achievement that was made all the more remarkable by the fact that he only played thirteen European events. He won four tournaments worldwide and eventually finished €1.3m clear of McIlroy in the Race To Dubai, with Paddy Power offering industry best odds of 5/1 for Donald to retain his title in 2012.
2010 Race To Dubai winner Martin Kaymer is also available at 5/1 and the 2010 USPGA Championship winner will be looking to rediscover his old touch. The German struggled for form last term but it might come as a surprise to learn that he finished third in the money list last season, albeit he did play 22 events. Kaymer showed signs of a return to form when winning the WGC HSBC Champions and notching two top eleven finishes in his final three events.
Lee Westwood better that form as the Englishman won two of his last three outings to take his tournament winning tally to four for the season. Like his English compatriot Donald, he is still searching for that first major win but he remains one of the most consistent forces on the European Tour. The 2009 money list winner finished fifth last year and can be backed at odds of 6/1 for 2012.
Next best in the odds is Sergio Garcia at 14/1 with PaddyPower.com and the Spaniard looks a very tempting punt. Garcia put a couple of poor years behind him to win back to back titles at Andalucia and Castella and it is worth noting that he finished eighth last term after playing only thirteen tournaments.
South African Charl Schwartzel is available at 18/1 after he finished fourth last year and he ended the season with six consecutive top ten finishes. The US Masters champion won the Joburg Open in January last season and will want to make full use of home advantage in the early part of the season.
