Tiger Woods is hot favourite for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill this week as he looks to end his long trophy drought. Bookmakers have installed him as a single figure price favourite, with Victor Chandler offering odds of 8/1 for the former world number one to end a run of no tournament win since November 2009.
Woods will no doubt be happy to return to Bay Hill on Thursday as he has enjoyed such success there in the past. The six time champion became only the fourth player in history to win the event four times in a row from 2000 to 2003, and followed that up with success in 2008 and 2009. He was absent last year because of his much publicised personal problems and despite an indifferent start to 2011 he has shown ominous signs of returning to form. His final round 66 at the WGC Cadillac last time out meant he finished tied 10th, which was his best finish this year and he could well be hitting form just in time for next month's US Masters.
The Arnold Palmer Invite is a select event as only the top 70 from the previous season's money list are invited, so Woods will face a strong field and with so many bunkers at the Bay Hill course sand play will be crucial. Graeme McDowell has built a reputation as a fine sand player and arrives as a man in form as the world number four is the highest ranked player in the field this week. The Northern Irishman has finished in the top ten in three of his four starts in America and despite missing the cut at Bay Hill in 2010 and finishing 40th in 2009, he looks tempting at odds of 18/1 to win this week or 7/2 to place with VCBet.
Dustin Johnson is second favourite though at odds of 16/1 after finishing second to an inspired Nick Watney at the WGC Cadillac. He has a record of three tops tens in seven appearances this year but was only 40th at Bay Hill in 2010.
Elsewhere, 1997 Arnold Palmer winner Phil Mickelson is priced at an industry best of 22/1 as he looks to find a semblance of form ahead of the US Masters. HIs US Masters win in 2010 was his last tournament win as he continues to tumble down the rankings after failing to finish in the top ten in four of five events this season.
Justin Rose is priced 30/1 by VictorChandler.com after his top five finish in the Transitions Championship. However, that performance was marred by his collapse on the final day as he hit a bogey ridden final round of 69 after being the overnight leader and it is worth noting that he missed the cut here last year.
Last year's Arnold Palmer champion Ernie Els can be found at industry best priced odds of 40/1, which are very tempting after his final round of 69 at the Cadillac propelled him to a top 15 finish. VC Bet also offer odds of 8/1 for the South African to place.
