The biennial Solheim Cup gets underway on Friday as the ladies' version of the Ryder Cup takes place at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Killeen Castle Golf Resort in Ireland. The course is notorious for its tricky greens where USA start favourites at odds of 1/2 with Bet 365, while Europe will be looking to make the most of 'home' advantage and can be backed at 2/1, with the tie priced 10/1.
It is no surprise that the American team start favourites as they have won the last three renewals of the Solheim Cup and can boast an 8-3 winning record against their European counterparts.
Furthermore, US captain Rosie Jones can call on three of the world's top ten ladies' players in her ranks and none catch the eye more than Cristie Kerr. The world number three has forged a reputation as an ultra consistent performer on the tour and she can boast career earnings of $13m plus. Kerr has only missed one cut in the last three years and she looks great value to be the top American player at the Solheim Cup at industry best priced odds of 5/1.
However, with home advantage and a good blend of youth and experience, Europe look to have a team that is capable of pushing the Americans all the way this time.
They may only have four players inside the world's top 30 in their team but captain Alison Nicholas has put together an impressive array of talent. The senior stateswoman of the group is without a doubt Laura Davies, who makes a record twelfth appearance in the Solheim Cup and who has a record in the competition of 21-17-5.
Davies is a meaty 16/1 to be the top European player with Bet365.com and that could tempt punters with half an eye on a sentimental bet.
Sophie Gustafson is another of the experienced players on the team as she makes her seventh Solheim appearance and the fact she has won on the Killeen Castle course in the past could give her and her teammates a huge advantage this weekend.
Norwegian Suzann Pettersen has also won on the course as she claimed the ladies' Irish Open last month. Pettersen is without a doubt the most high profile players on the European team, with eight LPGA titles to her name, and she is 10/3 favourite in the odds to be top European.
The value pick in the top European market could come from the in form Mel Reid at 10/1 with Bet365 though. Reid is making her Solheim debut but she arrives in the form of her life after putting together a hugely impressive amateur career. She won the Spanish Open last week to secure her third title of the year and make it consecutive top three finishes in her last four events.
If she can find that sort of form this weekend, Europe might just be capable of pulling off an upset and could be worth taking advantage of in the ante-post market.
