Three time ‘Major’ winner, Padraig Harrington is a warm order 8/1 favourite in the betting with VC Bet to win the inaugural Vivendi Cup which gets under way at Golf de Joyenval near Paris on Thursday. Harrington is one of two Ryder Cup players that will be in the very competitive field, the other being Swede, Peter Hanson, who is listed as a 10/1 in the betting with the same Bookmaker.
The event will be played over two courses, with the first 36 holes played as a Pro-am on the Retz and Marly courses with final 36 holes, played by the top 65 professionals playing exclusively on the par 72 Marly. The courses have been designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and both are relatively short. The Marly course for instance has four par 5 holes, all reachable in two, meaning that golf fans should see plenty of ‘birdies’ as well as a decent smattering of eagles.

Harrington of course was a Ryder Cup wildcard pick and will want to use this event to get his play honed in plenty of time to take on the Americans at Celtic Manor. He is without a tournament win since he won the US PGA Championship back in 2008, although he was second recently in the Irish Open and has enjoyed five other top ten finishes this year. His world ranking has also slipped to 22, the lowest he has been for four years.

Hanson has been in good form all year with two tournament wins, the first coming in the Mallorca Open in the early summer, which he followed up by taking the honours in the Czech Open last month, a win that guaranteed his place as an automatic selection for the Ryder Cup team. Like Harrington he will be looking to sharpen his game in France and should almost certainly be a major contender.
Other players to watch out for this week are Jose Manuel Lara, who won the Austrian Open last week after finishing 4th in the KLM a week before. It was his first tournament win for 4 years, but he is a player to back when in form and he is certainly in the groove at the moment. Lara can be backed at 33/1 with victor Chandler and we think he would be our each way bet this week.
The player we like for this however is Frenchman, Gregory Bourdy, who has had an amazingly consistent run without missing a cut for fifteen tournaments and is about due for a win after being without one since the 2009 Hong Kong Open. Bourdy, being on home soil so to speak, will be very comfortable on this course and as such he is our tip to win the tournament with odds of 20/1 with Victor chandler.
