This week the Champions Tour heads to Walton Heath Golf Club in London for the 2011 British Senior Open. Last year we had a thrilling finish to the event when Bernhard Langer and Corey Pavin battled down the stretch in an exciting duel to see who would take the title. In the end it was Langer who came out on top after a final round of 72 was enough to beat the 2010 American Ryder Cup captain by one stroke with a score of 5-under par.
The win meant the German finally claimed his maiden Champions Tour major and he is back this year to defend his title. Langer, who is currently 14/1 with Unibet in the outright market, won the ACE Group Classic in February but hasn’t played on the Champions Tour since March. He entered last week’s Open Championship at Royal St. Georges but missed the cut by four strokes with a score of 8-over par.
One of only two Champions Tour players to make it into the weekend at Sandwich, Tom Lehman is favourite in the market at 13/2 this week. As he always does, Lehman performed very well on the links and went into Sunday with a slight chance of landing what would have been a remarkable win for the 52-year old. However, in bad conditions on the last day he carded a 75 to drop down into a still very respectable tied-22nd finish. The 2006 Ryder Cup captain has won three times on the Champions Tour already this year and it is hard to look past him this week.
A winner of the Open Championship back in 1994, Nick Price is second in the outright market at 11/1. The South African has recorded a victory on the tour this year at the Toshiba Classic but he also has eight top-10 finishes. If Price continues his form this week he should definitely contend and we could see a great battle between him and Lehman for the championship.
Tom Watson was the other veteran alongside Lehman to be still in the mix at the Open Championship last Sunday. Watson, at the age of 61, was just as impressive as his compatriot by posting an incredibly good 6-over for the tournament to come in tied-22nd. That amazing effort might have taken a lot out of him but if he can muster up a similar performance this week, he is definitely worth a punt at 16/1 with Unibet.com.
John Cook and Tom Pernice JR might be names that the casual golf fan might not know but they are fancied in the betting for Walton Heath. Cook (14/1) has been in great form this season, winning three events to give Lehman a challenge for player of the year on the Champions Tour. Meanwhile, Pernice JR (18/1) could have made history last week by becoming the second oldest winner in PGA Tour history at the Viking Classic but lost out by a single stroke to Chris Kirk.
Of the more well-known players, Corey Pavin (22/1) is back to try win the trophy he came so close too last year, Mark Calcevecchia (22/1) took part in the Open Championship last week but failed to make the cut by four shots, and Mark O’Meara (39/1), winner of the Open at Royal Birkdale in 1998, could be a long shot this week.
Of the big outsiders, Des Smyth (100/1) has had a successful career in Seniors golf with a couple of tour victories, while Ian Woosnam (125/1) won the European Senior Tour Order of Merit just a couple of years ago.
