The Senior British Open Championship tees off at Carnoustie on Thursday as the veterans of world golf pit their wits against one of the toughest courses on the Open circuit. There will be six former Open Champions playing in the senior version of the championship this week, who have ammassed twelve Open wins between them. Five time Open Championship winner Tom Watson is near the head of the betting and after missing the cut in last week's Open at the Old Course he will be looking to justify the 16/1 odds he has been given by bookmaker Victor Chandler.

American Tom Lehman was the top finishing senior from last week's Open Championship at St Andrews and the 1996 Open Champion from Lytham St Annes is the 8/1 favourite for success in Scotland. Lehman ended up tied 14th at St Andrews last week on four under par, some distance away from the next seniors in the field, Peter Senior and Tom Pernice Jr who finished on three over par and Mark Calcavecchia who finished on +6. Lehman also performed well at Loch Lomond on the first leg of his Scottish tour and he is fifth on the Champions Tour order of merit in the US.
Pernice Jr and Calcavecchia are both well up in the betting with Victor Chandler for this week, with Pernice Jr a 16/1 shot whilst Calcavecchia is 18/1. The 1989 Open Championship winner at Toon was lying in second place this year at St Andrews before a disastrous third round score of 80 put him well out of contention. The big man from Nebraska tends to reserve his best form for links golf and if he can hold himself together for all four days he'll be in contention.
German Bernhard Langer never won the British Open but he'll arrive at Carnoustie as one of the favourites for the seniors version. The German plays his golf on the Champions Tour in the US where he is ranked third behind Fred Couples and Nick Price. With neither Couples or Price making the trip to Scotland, Langer looks to have a really good chance of breaking his duck on the links course and VictorChandler make him a 12/1 chance of doing so.
The two leaders of the European Senior Tour are relative unknowns but if they can string together the type of form they've been showing this season they look big prices. Thailand's Boonchu Ruangkit leads the order of merit yet he and second place Angel Franco of Paraguay are both 80/1 shots to win the tournament with Victor Chandler. In fact, third placed David Frost from South Africa is the shortest priced players from the European tour, at 28/1 with VCbet.
One thing for sure, there'll be plenty of familiar faces on display at Carnoustie this week, including current American Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin, three time Open Championship winner Nick Faldo and winner of this tournament last year, Loren Roberts.

8/1 Tom Lehman
12/1 Bernhard Langer
12/1 Loren Roberts
